be curious to know if it fixes it for you. the tensioner you ordered is part 11287549873, correct?

I will post back if it does, sure sounds like that's what it is. Yes, that is the same part number on mines. I am very curious to find out how long these tensioners should last, I couldn't imagine the spring going bad that soon given how beefy it is, and it does seem like the pulley itself can be replaced. The pulley/bearing part # is also stamped on it, but a search turned up nothing. It is an INA pulley/bearing.

Thank you for the info, mine whines when it is cold out when I rev it just slightly on a cold start. Sounds like an old Chevy power steering with low fluid.

I don’t have the whine like in the video in 3rd gear high speed though.

It isn’t a horrible whine but not what you would expect from a bmw.

I’ll check out the tensioner.
Your noise is 100% the power steering pump. When the fluid is cold, it's more viscous, causing more pressure in the pump impeller housing, causing the pump to work harder, making it whine.

I am pretty sure that is it. I was going in for an oil change and coolant flush so I am having it taken care of then.

Be interesting to see if one or the other is the cause or they are two different things with a similar sound.

Just to post back on this. I finally got around to tackling this over the weekend. Mines did end up being the belts/tensioner. Anyone know how to verify date stamps on the tensioner? My stretch belt for the AC compressor definitely has 2013 stamped on it, so i believe its OEM. I believe the tensioner is probably OEM as well.

What parts did you replace. My m5 thinks it's also running a super charger. I do have catless downpipes so don't know of that makes a difference.

Mine ended up being the tensioner as I thought it would be.

I replaced the tensioner assembly, the stretch belt for the AC compressor and the accessory drive belt.

Finally doing this tensioner, anyone have the torque specs for install? Is there a good place to find torque specs?

Thank you so much for mentioning this. I finally got around to changing my tensioner along with the belts (while in there) and my old Chevy power steering noise is gone. It was getting louder and ruining the fun noise the car makes .

Mine whines louder than a nagging wife 🤣 even when warmed up which I find strange... I've learned to tune it out / accept that its probably normal. Haven't had the time to actually dissect as to where it is coming from as I rarely drive the car.

Finally did some more driving this week, turns out my whine is still there and the driveway test wasn’t good enough. Going to pursue a power steering fluid exchange. .

Sorry to hear you still the whine.

I will be doing my belts and ordered a tensioner as well for preventative maintenance. Did you have to remove the radiator to get sufficient access to the belts/pulleys/tensioner?

I did it all only removing the tensioner and belts (and one other bolt holding hoses to the engine so the belt could come out). It was super tight and rough but I got it done. Needed the exact length Torx bit with breaker bar.

The ac belt tensioner/removal was unlike anything I have seen. Take 4 bolts out of the main pulley with the arrow on the main pulley facing right, rotate main pulley to make the arrow face left, remove belt. Pretty wild.

Edit: I also took the plastic and metal belly pans off for the ac belt.

Thanks for the info. Good to hear it is possible to do the belts without removing the radiator. I bought a stretch belt removal tool which kind of clips onto the pulley and is supposed to slide that AC belt out (as you manually rotate the crankshaft) given that belt has no adjustment/tensioner and is supposed to "slip and stretch" on.

That’s the thing, it does have a tensioner, it is the main pulley. It has a u shaped middle so that when the arrow is facing the ac it lets the tension off and the belt comes right off. Then as you turn the crank back so the arrow faces away it tensions it back up, then you put the four bolts back on. It’s a pretty smart design.

I found pics at the very end of this video:
