Bimmer Performance Center S63 Built Motor #2

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Our second S63 built motor build is underway. The block, sleeves, pistons and rods will mirror the same S63 that made over 1000 rear wheel horsepower. That build now has well over 20,000 miles of daily driving, half mile events, car shows, driving to and from events.

To pick up where we last left off I will post a link to the original thread where the motor bent a rod and now the customer is going with our S63 built motor package. This will be our second build with everything spec to our specifications that has been proven to withstand the abuse of highway/ dyno pulls and over 1000+hp at the rear wheels but still be able to be daily driven to the grocery store or pick up the kids. The only difference here is that the customer has elected to stay with factory turbos for now.

Bent rod thread: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1450605

Enough of me talking Ill let the photos do the rest I'll do my best to keep this thread updated with photos to keep everyone in the loop.

Nothing has been changed from stock other than upgrading components to withstand the abuse of making more power. Stock limitations are about 650-700hp before bending a rod. The 1000+rwhp S63 we built last year is the same as well. No compression upping or lowering, no oversized or undersized boring just added sleeves, pistons and H-Beam rods.

A question on the cylinder sleeves. Your sleeves have an upper lip, I believe since the sleeve appears so thick, while the sleeves in the engine of kmorgsm5 uses sleeves without a lip. Is there any advantage, one over the other? Once sleeved, can the block be re-sleeved again and again? Is the machining of the block more difficult for the sleeve with the lip?

Sleeves have been known to fall (drop). Adding the lip may help prevent that.

Sleeves are frozen and then inserted into the block. It expands and that’s what holds it in place. Adding the lip may prevent it from slipping down.

A big part of any engine build is the choice of materials. I am sure BPC has done a lot of R&D on this and can elaborate further!

I think the photos may be giving an optical illusion by playing tricks to the eye. The sleeves pictured have no lip above the block surface. Once the sleeves are installed, the block is then decked to make sure everything is flat for a good sealing surface. Most sleeves have a lip that is cut into the block that prevent the sleeve from falling or dropping down making contact with the crankshaft. This lip will help recess the top of the sleeve into the block.

The best thing about sleeving a motor is that as long as everything is ok with the block and its just normal wear you can remove the sleeves and resleeve the block again.

To sleeve a block does take time and lots of experience, only select engine builders know how to do this properly.

We have sleeved quite a few engine blocks for racing purposes, it does take high quality materials and R&D to do it correctly

I hope this helps answer your questions and shed some light on sleeving a block.

Thanks for your explanation. I never thought there was any extension of the sleeve above the block, just that you had to machine a recess into the deck of the block to accommodate the lip/flange of the sleeve. Would you agree that method seems much less prone to displacement than a sleeve without a lip?

Availability

Will your services include a ready to go long block which can be shipped out of your doors plus core charge? I would think that this would be the next step to seeing more of these motors in more cars. If not, I guess I will start looking for a used drivetrain out of an M car.

Just curious Phil, does BMW let us reuse the crank main bearing cap bolts? They seem to have throw away bolts everywhere else. Those stout four bolt mains must have a high grade bolt. Oh, and what is the function of the small bolt between the two large bolts on each side of the main cap?

Main bolts are not reusable, I will get an answer for you on the small bolt between the two large bolts.

Awesome projects your team is doing and thanks for sharing information with the forum, that is really appreciated.
On installing sleeves, are you removing cylinder wall material to allow the sleeve to be accepted ?

Cylinder wall material is removed to allow the sleeves to be accepted. With the sleeve installed this retains the original bore size without compromising the blocks integrity and ability to support four digit power figures.
