How fast will M5 depreciate?

I'm sure those of you that lease have answers already.

But how fast and how much do you guys think the M5 will depreciate 3 years or 5 years down the line?

Considering the trend of previous M5, how much will the car still worth after 30k/50k miles?

One word: Lots.

Any 100K specialty but not uber rare care will depreciate a lot in that period.

For me, I'd hate to own such a technically sophisticated car off warranty.

Fast. Lease rates have residuals at roughly 50% after three years.

Ugh, I hate hearing things like that. It goes against every asian bone in my body saying a car is the worse investment.

but at least auto loans are super cheap!!!

Historically, the 7 series has even worse depreciation rate than an ordinary 5 series. If comparing to a M5, I still think M5 will still be hit less harder.

The more I drive and look at this car, the more I'm of the opinion that this is the best looking and all-round car BMW had made, something that one wouldn't want to sell because there's nothing better you can get for the value.

Can't imagine how they can make a better looking car in future, a fantastic classic design.

About depreciation, the more expensive and the less practical a car is, the higher it will be depreciated. Usually cheaper and more practical cars have least depreciation.

True.

I was originally comparing it to a GTR which have one of the lowest depreciation rate. (<30% in 3 years) But I guess there will be a lot more M5 volumne wise.

Ouch that's bad. I assumed it to be a lot higher because of how much it's sort after.

They will make a better one. They always do
I would say the M5 is pretty practical. Compare to the less practical GTR. If you brought a GTR in 2008 Which costed $70k, you can still sell it for $60k today!

Lower than that actually.

i believe the best residual I've seen is 47% and that falls throughout the year.

Currently on BMW.ca the residual for M5 with 10K miles is 44%

Doing a loaded 550 Xdrive at 10K miles is 47.5% residual.

It's all ugly.

You may be looking at the 2012 residuals for the 550???

here are the 2013 numbers. 56% for 15,000 miles, 58% for 12,000

http://www.ridewithg.com/index.php/2...s-august-2012/

M5 would be 51% with 10,000 miles. see below

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=632613

EDIT, I just saw you were looking on BMW CANADA.

BMWFS Residuals are not a useful indicator of resale values since they are manipulated for promotional purposes.

Better to look at ALG values.

Indeed.

I wish we had both the pricing and residuals you have "down there".

the 550 was for 2013, BMW canada doesn't have anything yet for the 2013 M5....

within 6 years, you'll see a M5 with around 30k miles in the low $50ks - high $40ks

Reasonably I would expect a depreciation of the following:

In Canada the car is loaded at 115k so considering 10,000km of driving per year..

1st year: 22%
2nd year: 17%
3rd year: 15%
4th year: 10%
.....

Thoughts?

If you can buy one of these machines just enjoy it and have fun. A car at this level is no more than a personal toy, and not basic transportation. All I can say I will smile when I take it out on the weekend. I hate to say it will have no more than 5k miles in a year, but fun. Enjoy your cars is all I can say!

Mine will be my DD, I'm expecting 15-18K per year and will not think about resale until I'm good and ready to move on to the next must-have sports sedan! I'm guessing I will have this car for 4-5 years which will equate to 60-70K. I'm guessing the car will be worth $30-$35K at that point.

I completely agree - no more discouraging and depressing news about a car we haven't even taken delivery of yet. If you are concerned about resale – this type of car should not even be on your radar!
