Not too bad! I was expecting it to be a little higher. We were hoping for a summer release here though

Nice price, although exact spec's will tell whether the price is right (excuse the pun). How much did a F10 550i increase over an E60 550i?.
I asked this because while we know that alot of work went into modifying the engine, they didn't start with a fresh blueprint, its not a 'bespoke engine' as Clarkson would say, thus less development cost, and so in my mind the price differential between an F10 550i and an F10 M5, should be less than the equivalent E60s.

Good call, but why is it cheaper than the x6M? Isn't it actually a better car - newer F platform, revised S65tu engine, better differential, much better interior quality...

I don't understand that other than X6 has Xdrive and weighs a sh*t load more. How much will the 2013 x5M cost (2012 started at 87K)?

Base price of under $90K is not bad. I wonder what the options will cost and what comes standard.

This is what was displayed by the F10 M5 during the 12 Hrs of Sebring, looks like those will be the packages in the US, but let's wait to see the pricing.

Correct...you use BMW's cars, then they sell them to the public lol. But don't worry, these cars are DESIGNED to be driven that way!!

Also I heard if you buy the M5/6 you will no longer get the performance driving school....which SUCKS! Hope they decide to include it again.

Sadly it is true, I don't see BMW reinstating this especially in the 1st yr of M5 sales. Towards the end of the production cycle or if interest decreases (hard to imagine that) then maaaaaybe, they may throw it as an incentive but I doubt that especially as each consecutive quarter seems to be setting the all-time record for sales...

Definitely getting me one of these! The only question now is whether or not to wait a year or so to let them get some bugs out of the system.

if I remember correctly the last M5 came standard with stuff like heated seats and navigation, so I would hope the new one does too.

So basically $90K might buy you a M5 with the same options that a loaded M3 would have, which would make it around a $15K-$20K premium, not bad.

of course I am sure there will be a $2K sound system, $4K dynamic something package, $4K super premium package, $4K tech package (on top of standard nav), $2K wheels... so yes $105K-$110K "loaded" is possible, but I think plenty would be happy with the "standard" $90K car. I will be looking for a used one in 2 years, so all you buying it new please load up on options since those add little to resale

When I was hearing $95K starting price last month I thought BMW was crazy, because thats what a CLS 63 cost, the E63 AMG starts $2K cheaper BUT has 40 less HP, to get it on par with the M5, you have to add a $7K performance package, meaning the M5 is actually $5K cheaper than an equal performing E63, good job BMW! Now lets see a $7K BMW performance package giving this monster 600 HP and including whatever dynamic handling/suspension package will be available

I think this may be my next CPO purchase. Didn't hurt to by a mint M3 sedan at a 25k discount!

That is what I was thinking (test drove a 991 S last week). The two cars are completely different. I'd love the Porsche but I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and with our winters the Porsche isn't the best choice. Plus, after the residual and lease rates in Canada, you might as well be buying the car out - not something I'd want to do with a Porsche that has spent 3 winters in the salt and sand. So it turns out in my province, the S is a rich man's toy.

The M5 on the other hand is well suited to winters up here and a young family. Granted it will never drive and handle like the S, but is will make a satisfying alternative.

On price

On comparing price between countries remember to compare apples to apples, so base spec needs to be factored in. Also, in the USA prices are quoted excluding sales tax that varies by state and is typically in the 6% to 9% range. In europe prices are usually quoted inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT, TVA, etc.) that in most european countries is approaching 20%.

Auto manufactures can't do much about sales tax rates and need to price according to local market custom. Normalize for taxes and specs and you'll get a much more accurate picture of price difference by market.

Indeed, I really would like to ask the BMW managers how they can justify the huge price differences between some countries. Sure, there are countries with big luxury taxes, but for example Switzerland has no luxury taxes and the salex taxes are 8%, so how can they justify that the M6 convertible costs about $ 114'000 in the States and about $ 200'000 in Switzerland. Yes, they'll probably have some more equipment in the base model, but that's definitely not the whole explanation.

I have to ask...why is everyone so surprised at the price? It went up $5000 from the E60 M5...What were you guys expecting?

Canadians now have something more to be happy about, the price in Canada actually dropped several thousands of dollars.

So I'm just curious, why is everyone so happy about the price going up 5k? Were you expecting 10k additional?

Dunno if I would call it surprising, but think is in line with most reasonable expectations.

What was the last yr of the outgoing E60 M5 - 2010? This is a MY 2013, so 5% over 3 yrs is not that bad, and it is not like the dollar was helping in the meantime. Factor some inflation and hopefully more standard features, and it is looking like a good deal to me.

When will we see option pricing???? I'm between getting a 550 M Sport that will be $83,000 MSRP and a M5. I wanna see what the M5's price will be with options. I know I want the 20s, HUD, B&O and BMW Apps. I wonder what the packages will have in them and what they will cost.....

Even without those options, I'm thinking the M5 would put a bigger grin on your face. Plus, based on reported fuel economy numbers, the M5 uses less fuel than the 550.
