I wrapped my downpipes with the latest DEI Titanium Lavarock heatwrap and am quite happy with the results. I highly recommend you consider the option.

Yes definitely wrap them to keep the heat down. I wrapped mine in PTP lava wrap which you don't have to pre soak or spray with anything.

What's downside to not wrapping them? Assuming it's just a street car and not tracked or raced really

I high temp powder coated them and was going to wrap them but my shop that installed them recommend just the coating only.

I would just wrap them and be done with it. DEI Titanium wrap will work better than ceramic coating them.

Didn't want to go with PTP's Turbo Blanket as well? They make one for the F10 M5.

Yea I have those too and they work well. I got mine during a black friday sale they had for like $180. They cut the temperature in half. Here are some temps of the oem heat shield without the blankets 355 degrees and with the blankets 166 degrees so a big difference in temps.

I disagree. I also had a brand new AMG C63S and the cooling fan ran extremely loud during warm summer days. Sounded like a hvac system for a building. The result after a couple months? Coil packs started failing and I had to limp to the dealer. They had my car almost a month because the parts were too new to stock.

My takeaway is that these twin turbo designs get hot no matter what and you don't have to be tracking your car. Also it will get hotter back there with aftermarket downpipes. It is a good thing to mediate the hot temperatures.

Excellent! Just what I wanted to see.

I'll be going this route in a couple months when I do some 200 cell catted DPs. I intend to wrap them and install this turbo blanket.

At that price I would say definitely worth it.

Originally I think they had it listed around $600-$700

The purpose behind wrapping/ coating aftermarket downpipes on the N63/S63 is that the piping used is thinner than stock meaning more heat can radiate from them. From what we have gathered with our experience is that if you don't wrap or coat aftermarket downpipes they will add excessive heat to the back of the engine and cause cylinder damage in the back cylinders. The factory downpipes are double walled preventing this issue from the factory.

It doesn't matter if you are tracking or just daily driving it. Add exhaust wrap or get them coated to ensure your N63/S63 will live longer and happier.

I dont believe all the companies would sell downpipes as is without a coating or wrap or even a warning if this was true

Never read a thread about an engine failure from that

My pics never got uploaded.

They do cause an increase in heat at the back of the engine and just depends on how hard you run the car. Would still wrap them as stated above stock are double lined, aftermarket ones are not.

It's kind of common sense when you consider how thin aftermarket pipes are. That radiant heat goes somewhere unprotected. And it doesn't have to be an "engine failure". Failures can manifest itself in other areas.

Same goes for direct inject engine care. You really should have an oil catch can and use oil with a high evaporation point to mitigate effects of oil blow by. Water injection even helps too. Don't think these cars come absolutely perfect from the manufacturer. They are designed with the constraints of bean counters and local emission laws.
