What's going on with my turbo?
I just topped up some oil. Noticed some residue around a turbo. It looks like it's coming from the cooling line. More specifically, the shielding and foam?
Guess it got a little hot and melted? I checked the turbo coolant tank. It's full. Anyone have any ideas? Other turbo is clean. |

You have a slight coolant leak. Mine is exactly the same at the moment, BMW do a repair kit that includes 4 hoses 8 clips and 4 heatshields. I'll be changing mine this week.
Despite the hoses supplying and returning water to the turbos it is not actually the small reservoir that supplies the coolant, it is actually the main reservoir on the right hand side of the engine bay when looking at the car. Check that also. |

+1 to the above. Buy the hose with clamps kit and replace them all.
The problem is the clamps don't hold as tight as they should. BMW replaced them and added the heat shields but they still leak. I have the same thing going on. I just got the hose kit in, now to find the time to get them changed. Here is a link so you see what it is: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...t/11538092360/ BMW #11-53-8-092-360 Good luck |

Ok about to finally take care of this. Looking at the kit.. it comes with some hose clamps:
I'm just wondering if there's any particular reason BMW went this direction? Looks like some cheap shit. Any reason why I shouldn't use some stainless adjustable clamps instead? |

I would use the clamps in the kit picture or fuel hose clamps. Dont use the ones you have in the bottom pic. The reason you dont use those is they actually put small cuts in the rubber lines as they tighten. If you notice the clamps in the kit or fuel line clamps have smooth finishes and not serrated like the screw type clamps.

Coolant leak 100%. Easy fix. Just had mine done (again). Dealership and service advisor I have a great relationship with. They installed the updated kit free of charge even though out of warranty

I’m having this done now again because coolant is leaking from the turbo lines even though it’s had the fix and shielding done.
I have the CPO warranty taking care of it, but feel like the dealer would NOT have covered me otherwise. I guess this is something we have to continue monitoring long term. |

This is actually a super easy DIY. It took me less than 10 minutes to access and complete without having done it before. There are a few tricks to keep in mind.
First, I found the easiest way to remove the old clamps is to release a little ear holding the loop together with pliers. Cut the old lines in half with a blade. You probably won't spill any coolant. But put a towel under the lines before you cut them. The kit was actually available at the local dealer.. Came out to be about $70 but it's a bit of a joke. You could probably assembly the same thing for $6... I went for the kosher. However, the BMW kit *does not* come with shielding. If you need this done, you've probably cooked your shielding. |

I tried to knock this out this morning, but couldn't tell if the BMW supplied heat shields were reusable. Most of it seemed to disintegrate upon contact, so it's pretty much toast, but I need something to "shield" the heat until the new ones arrive. Is there a trick to pulling them off? I tried to pull them open like a button, but it didn't jive and I wasn't sure if they were one time use. I added about a liter of water this morning, and I have an appointment with the BMW service center on Monday (for a separate issue) and wanted to get them to check the coolant levels to make sure the system wasn't low. Any other tips? |

I got the kit from ecstuning and some clamps from Home Depot. Only one was leaking but I ended up replacing all 4.
