Getting a M5/M6 very soon
Hey everyone, I'm about to trade my 650i for either an M6/M5. I wanted to know what year should I get from the F10's and M6? and why?
Thanks and advance. |

2014+ for facelift (LED headlights, better looking steering wheel), Comp pack, NBT (nav/infotaiment system), CCB (if you're into that). A lot of changes with the facelift and they're all worth it.

I was stuck between M6 GC and M5 before buying the M5.
M6 Pro (or M5 con): - lower and wider, looks cooler at first glance - less common (though neither are all that common) M6 Con (or M5 pro): - long overhangs front/rear looked less modern since most newer cars push the wheels to the corners - no sunroof (this wasn't as big of a deal as I expected) - low roofline (I'm 6'3", so it wasn't a big deal, but I did need to think about it or I'd bump my head) - less rear legroom (i have kids) - About $10k more on the used market - Smaller aftermarket when mod time comes - You need to buy 2015+ to get the updated wheel, CP, LED's, etc (vs 2014 for M5) - exact same powertrain, so not any faster - larger footprint, so parking that M6 GC (on a 7 series frame) in the city isn't as convenient - It was more "showy". This can be a pro or con, but as a dentist I prefer the less showy car so patients don't notice. I also don't have to talk to random kids every time I fuel. The only people who notice are true car people. They're usually great to chat with. For a weekend ride the green Lambo is fine, but as a DD the M6 would draw too much attention for me. M5 F10 still is King.
Go with a good l/m standard one if you don't want the firmer ride of a Comp and check out the oil consumption before purchase.

Firstly, the M6 GC is NOT on a 7-series frame. The 7-series frames are on a 126 inch or so wheelbase, so it's not even close. In fact, the M6 GC and M5 have the EXACT same wheelbase length. EXACT meaning, literally down the same fractions of an inch. What the M6 GC and M5 does deviate from a measurement standpoint are: 1. M6 GC body length is about 4 inches longer (all of which attributed to the front bumper design), and ONLY 0.5 inch wider on the body. 2. M6 GC body height is 4 inches shorter than the M5 3. M6 GC track and body width are 0.1 and 0.5 inches (respectively) wider than the M5 4. M5 passenger compartment is 2 inches wider than the M6 GC (M5 can legitimately seat someone in the rear center bench.) 5. M5 rear passenger headroom is marginally higher than the M6 GC (the rear is 1 inch taller in the M5, front headroom are the same) 6. M5 weighs about 10 lbs lighter than the M6 GC 7. Finally, if you're talking about the M6 coupe, it's a smaller car. The wheelbase is 4 inches shorter than the M5/6GC and slightly shorter in height. http://www.bmwpower.ge/pages/technic.../f10-m5-sedan/

also FYI, these are the y/y changes for the M6. The updates have been a bit different than the M5.
2013: -Launch year, only Coupes and Convertibles in this model year -CIC idrive 2014: -Gran Coupe introduced -Competition Package (575 HP) offered. http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=873975 -First generation NBT 2015: -NBT updated to touch controller and larger screen. -LCI headlight refresh http://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1067822 2016-17: -Competition Package power bump (600 HP) http://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1264569 -Competition Edition Coupe introduced for MY2016 http://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1173192 -NBT interface update 2018: -Only Gran Coupe and Convertible models offered 2019: -final model year -Only Gran Coupe offered Across all model years, the steering wheel has remained the same (2013 M5s had the old steering wheel). Really, the only updates thus far in this generation has been and likely remain: 1. headlights 2. idrive 3. ZCP Things are a bit more complicated on the M5 side - There was even rumors that the base suspension was retuned between 2013 and 2014 and the timing for updates lagged behind the M6.
