What should be my next car?

Hello M5 Enthusiats,

I'm reaching out to you all for any feed back as to what I should do with my current car, keep, sell and what to get next.

Here's what I got. I have a 2013 F10 M5 going on 90K miles. I've owned for about 3 years. It's stage 2 and has basically every bolt on and exterior mods I want done. I've done spark plugs and rotors and brakes, new wheels and a control arm. Had to replace a couple fuses, oh and changed the battery. For an M car, I feel it's been a pretty reliable car.

I'm looking to sell for the following reasons:
Higher miles, reading the F10 M5 forums and people blowing their engines, I live in the PNW and the roads and winter can be much for a RWD and finally just getting the itch for something new.

Here's what I'm thinking of getting next and the reasons why I'm unsure. Also, all I'm interested really is a well rounded car that goes fast in a straight line!

- BMW F90 M5. Lease is around $1200 a month; which is a little high or a lot high lol. If I can find one around $900 it would be better. AWD is such a plus, but aren't these the same engines and could have the same problems with the F10 M5's with engine blowing up. How's the axles on these, much better? The F10 M5, anything north of 700 HP you'll have to replace clutches and axles and run meth.

- 2018 F80 M3 ZCP or CS. I love the looks of the M3 and have always wanted one since the E92. I'm 37 and work professionally. I'm hesitant as the M3 platform seems to appeal to a younger crowd. But the looks, the looks! Plus it seems as your pushing higher HP they are more reliable EXCEPT the crankhub! Also, has anyone gone from M5 to M3 and regretted it? Are the CS seats really uncomfortable. Oh and it's RWD, back to my grip issues.

- 2018 Audi RS3 - Almost bought one in the specs I wanted local, but couldn't get my M5 sold. I've owned a couple Audi's, RS6, B8S4, and Audi A4's. All Audi's were pretty amazing, with the exception of the 2011 B8 S4, it just felt so cheaply made and didn't offer the driving experience my M5 currently gives or my previous GT-R. I've heard great things about the RS3, from good driver feel, to easy to mod and get in the 10's and pretty reliable and AWD! Only thing is the looks can be subject. But just a great all around fast daily that will beat 98% of the cars with FBO and it will grip.

- 2019 X3M - Would lease this and it has the new S58 engine that reportedly is one of the strongest engines BMW has made and they also fixed the crankhub issue. Just a tune on these are getting into the mid 10's at 120-126 et. But my wife just bought a 2016 BMW X5. I love the looks and the potential of the X3M with just a flash, but it's a SUV.

- Keep the M5 and wait for the 2021 BMW M3 - the new M3 will have the S58 engine and it will be AWD. It's just a couple years away. I can keep the M5 and wrap it nardo grey this summer and refresh my tune. I still owe on the M5 and by then who knows how low the value will be and maybe no one will want to buy it at 100k plus miles.

Thanks for listening! Any feed back would be great. Oh and by the way my M5 is for sale

A G series M3. I assume you need a four door car. If not, the M2 Competition is currently BMWs most fun to drive M car.

Personally I'd wait and see what the new M3 offers. If you find its face bearable then I think it could be a solid replacement. The 3-series keeps growing so it will be spacious enough, I believe it will have the same AWD/RWD system as the M5, and it will be lighter and more engaging than the M5.

I'm not sure what you meant about the F80 chassis appealing to a younger crowd. Do you mean the buying demographics or ride quality/NVH? I'm sure plenty of M3s are owned by the 40-50 crowd while the M4 might be a little younger. It's way more refined than the E9X chassis was which to some is a plus, to me it's not.

I'm also an M2C fan like some of the other posters here but it comes with some drawbacks. It's small, 2 doors, not very luxurious, and only comes with black interior.

If you need 4 doors and AWD you can't beat Porsche for quality fit and finish and great Performance.

I would go to a good BMW dealer and have them notify you of interesting cars coming off lease that might interest you and have them do an appraisal of yours for trade in. That will give you a good basis to make a decision. Quite often they know when a nice car is coming off lease before it is listed and it gives you time to research and think about it. Funny though I have bought my BMW's from Audi and Mercedes dealers which were trade ins and better deals than BMW dealers.

I don't have a lot of advice on what to get but I would consider returning your car to stock prior to selling/trading it in. You could sell the parts and add to your funds down on the new car. You just don't get enough or anything at all for your mods when you sell.

Personally, I'm a BMW guy so I would definitely go with either the f80 or f90 depending on how sporty you want the car to feel. Personally, I like the more "business class" feel of the M5 and I'm in my mid-forties so I feel an M3 would be more of a middle age crisis type purchase.

Thanks for the feed back guys. I'm leaning towards the F90 M5, just for that very reason Larry77 mentioned it's the business class feel. I just have to wait for the prices to come down a little.

But who knows if I find an M3 CS on lease swap in that blue color, I might just have to try it for a year.

What's your thoughts on it being the same engine as ours and it having the same issues?

I've heard the drivetrain and clutches are much stronger, just not sure how much HP the F90 can hold. But I don't see myself going anywhere past a stage 2 as the AWD will put it in mid 10's. that's good enough for me.

From what I'm seeing from the F90 forums, they are doing pretty well. I'd recommend taking one out for a test drive.

For F90 M5 money you could get a gently used 2020 m340i x-drive for daily use and a gently used 2020 M2 Competition for weekend duty. The perfect bmw combo in my opinion.

True true, I guess it all depends on how you want to keep your cars. One thing that I really liked about the M5 is how versatile it is. Having the ability to have the whole family in the car, go grocery shopping and then go take it out and pull on other cars in "Mexico".

Thanks for your feed back. For me that’s too many cars in the stable. Don’t get me wrong the M2 CS is such a sexy car but I prefer 4 doors. I’d probably get the RS3 if I wanted the best of both worlds based on the cars you mentioned.

If you haven't already, go give the new m340i a thorough test drive you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks, but tbh the only think that will make me get over the new looks is if it has an M badge, it's AWD, pushing 500+hp

Well it's got an M badge, AWD, 400+ horsepower, is faster than the f80 M3, maybe even the f10 m5 before 120 mph, and has gone back to the M driving characteristics that made M cars M cars.

KEEP IT!

Beautiful car! I'm going to say keep it! I know some modded F10 M5 owners with over 100K miles and still going strong with no issues. Don't trade it in because you will loose a ton of money. Like you said it has been reliable probably because you have taken good care of it. On your next oil change I'd take a sample of it and have it sent out to a lab like Blackstone to get an oil analysis done. If everything comes back good that will relieve your concerns about your engine. If not then maybe look at your other options.

Have you driven an AWD high hp car? I ask because I always wanted an RS7 and finally bought one in late Aug. Fast forward to December, traded it in on an M6. The Rs7 is balls, straight balls fast. Great sound, brutally fast, really cool/sleek looks and can be launched repeatedly without skipping a beat.

That said, gets boring. It just does everything so well, except in the twistys, and doesn't get out of shape. For me, it wasn't engaging enough. Now the new F90 can be adjusted for RWD to let you play some, but take that into consideration. Putting the M6 in MDM allows traction to break loose and it's just an absolute joy to hear it crackle and bang while sideways.

Just something to consider. Go drive the RS3 before committing. Awesome car, stupid fast as well, but I bet it'll get boring.

whatever he ^^^^^ said.

same reason I traded in my GTR few years ago. I may have also been spoilt by all the RWD fun cars I had before it.

I'm not comparing it to an F90 but you need to know what an AWD sports car fun is vs. RWD sports car fun.
