2016 M5 w/ replacement DCT, should I worry?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking at a 2016 M5 w/ competition package and approximately 30K miles. I am able to get a factory warranty, and would probably go for 72 mos/75K miles.

The car has full service records at a BMW dealer and I am having it inspected out of state in the next day or two. It looks to be in excellent condition.

The issue that my current BMW dealer brought up was related to a notation on the service records 400 miles from the in-service date regarding rough shifting and coasting issues. It seems that the transmission was replaced, and my dealer says there were no more reported issues over the course of time.

Should I be concerned purchasing this car considering the DCT replacement? I am not incredibly worried considering the factory warranty I would have, plus what seems to be a diligent single owner. My concern would be the faulty DCT may have caused some sort of underlying and yet to be discovered issue with a another component, like the differential or something else.

Thanks everyone for your insight!

If they did the job correctly, that's one less area to worry about.

That is kind of what I am thinking, my dealer said I shouldn't worry about it being replaced so few miles after new, especially considering 30K miles without issue after the replacement, and the fact I would have a factory warranty. Just trying to cover all my bases I guess!

I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like it was corrected early as a likely manufacturer defect and never resurfaced according to the service history. Good Luck.

That was my feeling as well, but I actually ending up passing on this specific example as it had rear frame damage. On to the next one!

Good Call! Frame Damage means significant trauma somewhere along the way. Keep hunting. Plenty of gems out there and you'll sleep better at night knowing you chose the right one.
