Carbotech 1521 brake pads
Hi,
Just fitted Carbotechs 1521 pads: (F) CT1648-1521 (R) CT1469-1521 Great price and quick shipping from Mike (Thanks) Quick initial feedback. Easy install, if you haven't done electronic rear brakes (E-brake) then just youtube BMW rear pads like this one, its easy!: Fronts are easy too- note you have to unclip the brake flexi-hose and lift the caliper off the studs slight bottom stud first - its a tight fit but does come off. Back to the pads, no crazy break-in required according to Carbotech/Mike just normal driving for the first 300 miles to bed the pads on the disc's. Of note is the brake pedal feel is slightly firmer (I was running newish pads and discs all round so 'new' isn't the reason) and feel better than stock. Brake dust and the reason I did the change is 95% reduced so VERY happy! Noise - the Carbotech 1521 sometimes make some very light squeal when slowing from say 5mph to a stop on very light brake pedal, my OEM brakes were totally silent luckily although this is a feature of perormance brakes so would have been OK with some squeal and am very happy the 1521's are almost silent to. I need to do some more miles and harder use for fuller feedback on performance and if the pads become silent. But so far I highly recommend them and not just for the fact that after 500 miles my wheels look spotless |

Thanks for the review and tip. I would probably be more motivated to change if my wheels werent black.

No problem.
As I mentioned I prefer the pedal feel of the 1521 pads to OEM, pedal is slightly firmer with better modulation and consistency. Will be interesting to see how they perform now they are bedded in and I push them harder. Note these are road pads and I don't intend to take them to the track but I will push them hard from speeds of +170mph and spirited back road driving. I could make the OEM set up go to a soft pedal so will be good to see if these 1521's hold a firmer pedal longer. |

Thanks for the review. Will you report back on the brake dust? I'd like to see if they remain less dusty than OEM. I swear I could clean my wheels after even a moderate drive

Was the backing plate on the oem brake pad transferred to the carbotechs? I have a pair for the front and will be putting them on soon, i realized the pads don't have backing plates to them.

Alienstudio, the 1521's don't have the shim on the backing plate as per the OEM but so far not negative effect from this (brake fade, soft pedal or knocking from pad movement)
fhaze3, its a stark difference between OEM pad and 1521 regards dust, I to was fed up of cleaning the wheels and agree the dust from OEM's was evident even after one short drive. With the 1521's there is dust but literally 95% less, so its only evident after hard use, 400+miles and wiping your finger on what at first glance looks a clean wheel. there is dust but its more a light grey than the dark brown of OEM and in much smaller quantities. I managed to pushed the brakes hard this morning deliberately to try their performance, pedal stayed rock solid and totally consistent and I much prefer the feel and modulation of these 1521 pads, gives more confidence where the OEM pads would be slightly inconsistent and gave the car a feeling of being heavy and like its weight was being very hard on the brakes, the 1521's make the car feel lighter and more nimble if that makes sense? Note apart from the lack of dust which is very evident, the other changes are slight differences and are a matter of opinion, I am not racing and only do fast road use so no timing or other data was taken. The car is tuned and I do push it hard which did make the OEM set up soften the brake pedal feel with smoky pads and very blued discs! |

Quick update:
All noise/squeeks went after ~1000 miles, they are totally silent now (just like the OEM pads were for me) Brake pedal feel much improved over OEM - more confidence. Modulation is great. Dust- I would guess dust has been reduce between 50-70% and what dust is made is a light grey, not the dark brown of the OEM so its much improved. It means between washes the wheels look good with the dust only evident if you happen to rub your finger over the wheel reveilng clean paint. Very happy with the swap. |

More miles have passed and more observations:
When it rains these pads ease the intail grab when hitting the brakes which is nice, the OEM are more consitant here but are a little grabby in wet and slippery conditions. I had the pleasure to really push the car and brakes over both high speed back roads and super fast open roads cashing a litre super bike that really punished the brakes- the stayed the distance, no fade, just consitant braking that would have made the OEM pads soften the pedal feel slighly in the past. The disc's were well blued after but no noise, smell or fade. I didn't get to wash the car last weekend so ended up putting 1200 miles on it before the wash, the dust was still less obvious and easier to clean than the OEM pads over a couple of hundered miles. Still VERY impressed! |

Thanks for your continued feedback. Can't stand brake dust and these seem like the perfect solution. Plan is to combine them with ecs's stainless steel brake lines.

Had the front and rear brake pads installed last week and definitely can feel a difference. Was worrried that the front pads didn't come with weights on each side of the pad, but Jodie mentioned it was not needed. First 100 miles the rotors needed to get used to the new compound from these pads so the pedal felt spongy. This feeling went away as I drove more and more. So far I've put on about 250 miles and brake feel is better than oem and felt more control especially when it rains. These aren't as grabby in the rain compared to oem which I prefer. Overall I'm very satisfied with these and brake dust is about 70% reduced which makes cleaning rims so much easier!

Glad I found this!
I switched over to these and drove it for the first time yesterday. When I installed them, I followed a standard bed-in procedure without any issues. On my way home from work I noticed the slight squeak under light pressure and low speed. Glad to hear it will go away. Quote:

Installed these about 1.5 years ago and now they caused my rotors to be warped. Too much heat from harder compound probably (steering wheel vibrates). Not recommended for stock rotors.
I have to spend $640 on new rotors. They did keep my wheels clean for the most part. Although, I wouldn't say it's worth it |

Nope, never drove it differently than when I had stock pads. Every shop I've spoken too hates carbotech because they ruin rotors...but, hey, wheels are clean!
