I have had one of the worst purchasing experiences of my life with troy - he was out here servicing an e60 m5 he built that the trans blew out on and we met I gave him half down on a motor he already has finished building that didn’t work for another client because they didn’t specify they needed an X5M Engine and troy built a f10 engine
This guy has kept my money for months without shipping out the engine or coming back with it to install as promised now for months... I really hope his engine building is the opposite of his customer Service |

He said he's driving it back, he's on the way there tomorrow.Chicago to Miami is a monster trip.
I want to know if it was a crankshaft bearing or a rod bearing that spun. |

Careful driving back in the cold weather if you are on summer tires.
Went to "Tail of the Dragon" a few years ago in November never got above 40 degrees, was ok driving down from a heated garage. First run through the 300+ turns in 11 miles was great since tires still warm from 3hr drive, but a long stop till the advanced group (in the Bluegrass BMW CCA) got to run again allowed tires to cool to ambient at 38 degrees. I was aware of the huge traction drop off of my Pirelli tires at cold temps but braking for first turn was like being on ice nearly drove into side of cliff (better than off of cliff on following turn) A dozen more turns and traction started coming back, my buddy's Super Sports did better in the cold but they overheated at 9 mile mark and he started running wide and crossing center line. Amazing how much heat is generated when more distance is covered driving a turn (some over 180 degrees of arc) than on straights Since you are from Miami, thought i would share this, for all i know you are aware, but i would have felt bad if i had not given you a heads up and something happened |

I bought my M5 six weeks ago, last service on the car was february this year, mileage 55.250 (88400km). According to the service bill, the oil was changed With 0W-40, all previous oil changes looks to be 0W-30.
Now, after reading all of the threads on seized engines, i am gonna change the oil again this winter, only travelled 1250 miles since last service. Its stored for the winter anyway, and it gives me peace of mind changing it, all though the oil in the car should be good for another 3000 miles. Going With 0W-40 Castrol Edge. I have to say, reading all those threads on seized engines has made me a little anxious owning a car like this. Or am i overreacting? Certainly lurkes in the back of my head when driving the car. A good '12-13 M5 is $70k in Norway, no way i can afford a $50k engine change on top of that. |

Yes, that is actually good advice. Worrying about what can potentially happen is not healthy, and like you say, it ruins the pleasure of owning an M5 somewhat.
Buying a used M5 (or any high powered car for that matter) is a risk, as you dont know how former owners treated the car, even if the car has a full service record. I'm going to enjoy the car, and follow the two most important advices i have read in all of the threads covering rod bearing failures, and mentioned above by technician117, do regular oil-changes and let the car warm up before going nuts. |

no one knows how extensive these issues are, or if they can be avoided by extra care and maintenance. Yet.
about 5 years ago some heavily sold reasonably priced 3rd party insurance was cancelled due to increasing claim rate for e60 m5 many discussions on m5board. Bottom line, no matter how great the f10 m5 is to drive one needs to know that there may be no one to save your ass when faced with a $40,000 bill. Pay to play squared. To me the risk (Spending $$$ with Troy) would be worth the reward (low priced f10 m5) based on current odds i would happily roll the dice. But if i had to pay it would also not break me. Some just should not buy a hot V BMW unless they have the finances to deal with the yet unknown level of potential risk |
