Fuel Injector failure
Has anyone experienced fuel injector failures? I have been getting a check engine light (yellow), once in May, then consistently since the end of July for a mixture control, cross-bank fuel mixture too rich. In May the error was on Bank 1 and since July its been on Banks 1 and 2. Driving on the highway on Monday had a Drivetrain failure, lost any real power (car would move but could barley get up a hill), barely idled, and was smoking and smelled badly. Dealer found at least 1 injector had failed on Bank 1 and was dumping fuel into the cylinder and at least 2 others appeared on the verge. Mine is the first F10 M5 the dealer has seen with this issue. After replacing the injectors on Bank 1, clearing the codes and then driving it, Still getting a mixture control error on both banks. They are reluctantly replacing injectors on Bank 2 but I am trying to see if anyone else has had this issue. BMW wants to say it the continued control mixture error could be related to the aftermarket intakes (aFe) that I have but I am not buying it, especially since I have had the intakes since January 2015 and the error really just start the end of July. Thanks for any incite.

Per www.realoem.com, you guys use different injectors than the rest of the 3, 5, 7 and X vehicles, but these are KNOWN issues for failure. I just replaced all 8 of mine this weekend in my X5M.

How many miles are you on?
Put your stock intakes back on, and go to another dealer, have them replace all the injectors... if the issue persists, you probably got a leak in your piston rings (either seals or lands). Kinda going through the same issue myself right now. Once you start getting misfires in both banks, blowing smoke, and ruled out the injectors/coils/plugs.... its safe to say that you're in for a new motor. Hope you still got warranty... or get ready for a $10-14K rebuild, or $28K for a new motor (plus labor). |

No error codes lately (been about 2 months) but had exhaust manifold gasket leak which had to be repaired. Still have a rough idle issue that they are trying to put off. One of the techs thinks it could be carbon buildup. Waiting to see if BMW will cover under warranty (@ 2500 miles left). Would require dropping motor to disassemble. I have decided I am done. I am awaiting delivery of a 16 M3. Chalk this M5 up to first year (early) build and moving on.

Yes. I know someone that the injector leaked and basically caused the engine to hydrolock and damaged the rotating assembly, thus requiring a new motor.
From my understanding, Oil Pump was recalled, Fuel injectors in 2013 were just as bad. HOWEVER, the dealer decided to play a game where they would only replace the injector when it went bad one at a time. They should have done a recall and just replaced all the injectors with the revised fixed 2014 injectors in my opinion. |
