HRE wheels with 20mm spacers

I have an opportunity to purchase a set of 21” HRE monoblock wheels, but there’s a slight problem with the offset on the rears.

The front wheels are fine, and made specifically for a F10 M5. The rears, however, were made for a F12 6 series, and are a 21x11 +52mm offset.

According to HRE, the only way to run these wheels would be to utilize a 20mm spacer, which they don’t recommend.

But, I feel like the price for these rims is entirely fair, and I’d like to get the opinions of you guys on whether running those 20mm spacers is a good idea.

Thanks!

Regardless of the opportunity, why chance it? What are the pros and cons? What's the worse that could happen?

Well, I went ahead and bought them, so the worst that can happen is that I have to resell them. No big deal.

But someone please correct me if I’m wrong, because I think HRE made a mistake in the math....

The original wheel is 20x10+34

The HRE wheel is 21x11+52. A difference of 18mm

Because the HRE is 12.7mm wider on each side of center, in order to bring the wheel to the original place (in relation to my fender), I would only need a 5mm spacer.

Does that sound right?

That is correct, you would only need a 5-mm spacer to line up back to the original spot on the outside.

HRE said to put a 20-mm spacer because most buyers of HRE or aftermarket wheels would like a wider stance; usually the offset of an 11" rear wheel is in the low 30's.

I, for one, do not see a problem with a 20-mm spacer, just as long as it is hub-centric.

Bad idea, never run HREs with spacers.

Right.... I can hear HRE now: “No, don’t put on spacers; just buy another pair of wheels from us for $5K”

Lol

I think I’m going to grab some 15mm spacers and go from there. I like that I can play with getting different tire sizes and spacers to change fitment.

I honestly just think that the rep at HRE didn’t notice the width difference, and pointed me towards a 20mm spacer.

Now, now I just have to decide whether or not to keep my 343M’s.

Keep the 343s. It’s always a good idea to have an extra set of wheels
