Do you have an "other" car?

I'm looking at replacing my C5 Z06 as the weekend/toy car, but I'm having a hell of a time finding something that even matches up to my family sedan.

What do you guys have that feels like a step "up" in terms of performance without spending in the 100k range? I'm open to 50-85k on what that car could cost, but I'm really struggling to find one that isn't burned alive by the performance of my family car. The cars I've looking into so far, and please tell me if I'm missing one?:

Nissan GTR
Dodge Viper (either older Gen GTS or Base Gen5)
Mercedes AMG GTS
Audi R8 V10
Lamborghini Gallardo
Aston Martin

Thoughts on the BMW M4 GTS? Anyone have one of the above and speak to performance/reliability/fun factor? It's even ok if it technically isnt as fast in a roll-race, if it's fun-factor is big. The F10M5 is an amazing performer but can feel a little neutered to me sometimes.

Really, I'm looking for a bit of unique/exclusivity. Think "wow factor" picking your kid up from school kind of look. My C5, although older, was a rare Electron blue/Mod red car and even in it's old age still has a certain eye-pop appeal to it.

While it is at the top of the price range I would look into a 991 911 Turbo.

Yep, I actually should include I have looked at some nice 997 Turbo's, actually my "next step"/goal is a 991 GT3, which is a touch outside my comfort zone at this time. My problem with most 911's is they lack the unique "wow" factor that some of the others I listed above have. good call though!

Mine personally is the Mercedes AMG GTS or Audi R8 V10 if I could get another car in that range.

HA! literally the cars at the top of my list! I dont get why the AMG GTS is so "affordable"?! seems like a ton of car for the money.

I asked a friend who has a lot more experience with cars in that category and he said 911 or Ferrari 360. A 360 would definitely have the wow factor.

Actually he first said a 66-68 mustang fastback with $30K in suspension/chassis stiffening, but I'm guessing that's not what you were looking for, lol.

I already have a 1969 Chevelle SS. So, I'm covered on the muscle car front. Good point on the 360.....not a bad idea...

Going to look at a AMG GTS and a Gen IV viper. Should be interesting.

Nice! I'm a Ford man myself, but the Chevelle is great.

Update:

well, went for a few test drives today

https://adrenalinemotorcars.com/vdp/...banon-TN-37087

Beautiful car, and I've had probably 20 LS-based cars in my life, so this car felt like that comfortable old pair of shoes. If I hadn't just gotten out of my Z06, I would probably be much more impressed. Plus, this car just didnt feel exotic and fast enough(I know, that seems weird)

https://adrenalinemotorcars.com/vdp/...banon-TN-37087

This car was like meeting your childhood superhero. Don't ever do it, haha. I have always loved vipers. Yes, it's a Gen4 not a 5, but i figured why not. This thing was exactly what I was looking for in my 20's and exactly NOT what I want in my late thirties: Loud, smells, drones, stupid power, CRAMPED, horrible visibility, flashy. I couldnt wait to get out of this car.

https://adrenalinemotorcars.com/vdp/...banon-TN-37087

Damn...this thing was PERFECT. I'm a tall 6'6 guy, so interior space and headroom is a huge deal. This car was smaller but still comfortable. Great exhaust note, enough power to put a smile on your face, excellent tech/features, and above all great visual "wow factor". It also felt light, and had really great driving comfort. Overall, I think this is where I'm headed. I think this car is priced about 8k high vs everything else im seeing online. So, now off to find a deal on one.

Anyone else drive or own one of these AMG GTS's? Damn they are great cars!

Sweet deal. I really like the AMG as well but have never driven one. They do look great. Have you considered the gen 5 viper? There is no way it can be as bad as the gen 4. Although if you love the AMG it would be a waste of time lol. It has been at the top of a lot of car lists.

I am still holding out hope on the Gen5. The wife will probably refuse to waste the time going with me after riding in the Gen4, hahaha. SICK car, but man it was ttiinnyy. Researching the AMG, it's depressing reading the reviews from actual owners.

Come on a F10M5 board, and the discussion is each other bitching about:
the definition of a 'true sports car'
the best downpipes
who the bigger screwup will be for our next president.

You jump on the AMG GTS board and here's the rundown:
"how much farther will depreciation fall on our cars?!"
"ANOTHER transmission failure"
"Why wont Mercedes do extended warranties on our cars?"
"THIRD transmission failure for me"

YIKES...

For reference, i'm 6'6 260, so, interior cabin space matters. I think I've decided to kick the can on the car purchase temporarily and just buy a replacement streetbike. I put a deposit down on a 2020 V4 Ducati haha

I did ask my friend about the GT S and his response was along those lines. They depreciate hard (even worse than our Ms) and break a lot. I still think the 360 was a good idea, but I have no idea if you'd fit. Coincidentally, it looks like there's one for sale in Nashville, so you could certainly find out.

Thanks for the heads up/reinforcement on my worries on the AMG GTS. Sucks because man it's an absolutely amazing driver.

As for the 360, hhmmm...not a bad all round idea! I actually have sat in that exact car haha. It's tight but doable for fun weekend joy rides. Another one I'm on the hunt for a test drive now is a R8V10.

Thanks for the info!

haha yep, no problemo. Not saying he's right or wrong, but it does line up with what you got. They do otherwise seem like awesome cars. Friend also happens to have access to a V10 R8 plus and has spoken very highly of it. something like "the R8 drives so damn well". he's about 6'10", so I'm thinking you won't have problems fitting.

I will echo the same thoughts on the GTS, someone at work has it, and thought we rarely speak, I also see a loaner parked in his spot at work. Take it for what its worth.

I am not sure how old your kids are but the one car that blew my expectations was a 2019 Shelby GT350 - rare, fast and has the wow factor. It reminded a lot of my e92 back in the days with the high revving engine. Not sure if you one of 'those chevy' guys who will rather walk to work than drive a Ford, but something you can at least use as a comparison in your search.

So true, seems to be an excellent car/toy.

Ive been desperately to talk my kids into a GT350. I love them. My 11yr old is not sold, and my wife says "it's just a mustang".

But have they heard that engine note? Dayum! Just thinking about it compelled me to go find a youtube video of it to watch.

The next 35 seconds of this (extensive) review from savagegeese are pretty compelling. That said, while I'd argue it's not "just a Mustang", it obviously isn't going to satisfy the wow factor requirement as well as the other cars in the discussion.

It is a Mustang till you get in and hit the start/stop button. Once over 4500 RPM it sings like a Ferrari and corners like a 911. I drove one with a track pack and fell in love.

Unfortunately, my current situation doesn't permit me to have yet another toy.

well I've got a 15 gt3. and everytime I get in it I still say wow. it's not the rocket ship my tuned m5 is but it's a diff kind of rocket ship. hit some back yard curvy roads in your m5 and then get in a gt3 and I bet you will say wow then. I've got 33k miles worth of fun in it
