GTS Cayman tested

I think RPiM5 Dave would really enjoy this video. Maybe this is a hint as to what the GT4 could be.

Great video. Very tempting. Let's wait and see what the GT4 will like.

W.r.t. GT4, my only concerns are that the chassis be too stiff for road use and that Porsche will use 4 cylinder turbo rather than 3.8 flat 6 from 991 S (I would prefer throttle response not to be compromised for efficiency).

I was late in submitting my letter of intent for GT4, so I've gone from being 3rd in the queue at local dealer to 7th/8th, so may not even get a look in (lesson not to procrastinate learnt the hard way). US seems to have a completely different system to UK, or is it just that people are willing to pay over list price to speculators? Even after the engine fire issue, you cannot factory order a 991 GT3 in UK.

As a 'weekend car', as great as the GTS with sports suspension over PASM sounds, it does make me question the sense of wanting a relatively fast depreciating asset (in comparison to GT4) that may only get used occasionally. It (GTS) is still tempting as a long term investment if a GT4 is not available..

Love it
Love it
Love it
And this guy is the same guy who bashed the M5 in a comparison to GTR before really bashed it as gave it ZERO in everything !! I am just saying -
But thus Cayman GTS seems to be really nice!! And agree I would get this one 6MT!!
Cheap relatively speaking as this car is of course better than M4 for sure!! I am surprised he brought the M3/M4 up but price wise they are apples to apples !!

Thank you Alexy21 for the post -
Happy Memorial

Dude, you may have misunderstood that test - it was purposefully a one dimensional test (or rather multiples of) between similarly priced performance cars (hence, there will be some buyers interested in both), not an M5 bashing session as such. Stock for stock, GTR (or other dedicated sports cars) will always win hands down in those sorts of comparisons, Chris Harris also did M5 vs. GTR, but at least he extended his review to other aspects such as interior quality, NVH, on-track sideways fun, etc. to claw something back for M5.

Read between the lines and some pride/solace should be taken form the fact that the M5 comes close enough in performance to be considered a comparable car to the GTR, even if ultimately it loses in all the tests Autocar devised. If Nissan had not decided to increase the retail price of the GTR (in the UK) to match the price of the M5, the margin of victory may have been greater. And if someone where in the market for a 'GTR' type car but wanted better NVH, interior, etc. you have to pay for the extra development costs and go for something like 991 TT.

Sutcliffe does say he "loves the new M5 to bits and anyone who doesn't isn't a proper rev head" and don't forget his M5 CP vs. Vauxhall VXR8 video (similar in terms of usability, but clearly one is cheaper due to lesser cost of tech, chassis development, interior quality, etc.).

All valid vs. tests, but for differing reasons.

Cayman may only have two seats, etc. but I believe it is a good comparison to M4 (less so to 4dr M3) as the target buyers will have many similar requirements. Cayman will be the 'purists' choice; M3/M4 has to (and will) appeal to wider audience, until BMW decide to create M4 GTS, CSL, etc. (think black series AMG).

If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend a test drive - you can instantly feel the torsional rigidity of the car and the inherent mid-engine chassis balance, which then explains the primary ride - you can drive this car hard on a poorly surfaced road in complete confidence. Coming from an F10 M5, you just need to get over the lack of torque by driving it harder. The only problem being that it may then be difficult to eradicate the dark side from your deepest desires...
