Got my 'spare' wheel

I was never happy with not having a spare wheel or 'space saver' that doesn't exist just the emergency repair kit that would be useless for a serious puncture so grabbed a forged 9J 343M at a takeaway price i spotted which will be fitted the spare 265 tire I have.

One thing I found is that the TPMS rubber seal on the inside of the wheel was cracked so some rubber sealant was generously applied twice when the first application dried sufficiently. Appears the 11mm nut locating the unit was overtightened and it won't budge so not forcing it as it may break. I'm sure the sealant will prevent any air leakage and I'm about to start spot clear spraying the wheel where I've blended the bad bits into the metal finish. The finish on the wheel is factory original.

Ok after second thought not happy with the air valve stem at all and ordered a replacement with fresh seals and TPMS secure screw , will have to gently drill the old one off.

Received the new valve stem and after removing the old one carefully with a chisel and hammer (it was seized solid) the new one fitted like a glove holding the TPMS in the right position. 4nm of tightening the stem valve nut cover is like finger tight then under a turn more.
Now it's out with the stored tire and a trip to the tire guy for fitment and balance and my 2.5 ton weight pressure emergency scissor jack is on the way.

The maximum weight that can be jacked up using this 16'' long mini jack in an emergency, just need to put a rubber jack pad into the jack slot for a safe lift. It also came with an easy to use ratchet handle.

Where'd you get it?

I've thought about a spare, too. All that room back there that I'll never use. If I were to go somewhere long distance, I've got a giant back seat area for luggage.

Was lucky as single front 343M's hardly ever come up and I spotted it on the off chance on the e-bay internet site, if you see one then check with seller that it's not dented.
Breakers yards sell these wheels and naturally they are from totalled vehicles. Laying the bare wheel flat on a surface like a granite table when you receive it should tell you if it's an ok one.
It's worth buying a set of new valve stems also as these deteriorate after time, the new ones on e-bay have 12mm nut covers and the old ones are at 11mm which can't usually be removed with the alloy insides fusing to each other in a powdery mess, and good practice to replace the old ones when replacing worn tires.

I suppose you had to code the new TPMS? How'd you do it?

No, the TPMS unit was on the donor wheel programmed already and it's from a 2013 same as my car, so all I have to do if I fit wheel is to TPMS reset on the dash.

If you buy a new TPMS unit they should be programmed already, just get one for your year of car as '10 - Feb'14 and Mar'14 - '17 models may vary.

Wheel fits in the trunk deep in like a dream with the jack and L extension wheel brace tucked in a rattle free oblong box in the wheel hollow. Waiting on a black wheel cover for the 265 tire to make it all look neat.

My air pump and tire flat fluid is hidden under a lid beneath the trunk carpet together with the exhaust flaps actuator, you could say I'm well prepared for a flat ..all the other stuff on the sides are a spare new ignition coil, a rubber strip puncture repair kit, litre of Edge oil, gas additive in the box, high grip gloves and the list goes on.

On second thoughts now I'm going to store nearly all that spare gubbins in a suitable bag to clear those side pockets as it looks like a dogs dinner there and will go inside the hollow wheel well where you can't see it.

In '84 I met a lass on holiday in Spain. I took leave(US Navy) flew into London, tubed to King's Cross, boarded a train to Newcastle. She lived in a haunted house built in 1704. Everywhere we went, I only had to speak before everyone started buying the Yank a pint. I never bought a pint myself for 2 weeks. The Geordies were unintelligible even to her. Twas a wonderful time. Christmas morning I woke and looked out side, all white. I said to her Mum, look, it snowed! She laughed and said no dear, that's frost.

Always a pleasure talking with ex-Service personnel.
You got to taste a new beer over there then, Newcastle is a great place from what I've seen and read and some lovely lasses there too as you say.
Never been there myself but know the geordies are friendly to everyone and it's where our legendary football World Cup hero Paul Gascoigne was born and still resides I think and he likes a pint or two of Newcastle Brown ale.
