Lease Return Tire Brand

I only have 5/32" tread depth left on my Michellin and about 8 months left on my lease. I know that BMW lease return requires 4/32 tread depth or a penalty will be assessed. Rather than spending top dollars for another set of Michellin or Pirelli, I see that Kumho Esta PS91 is available for the same spec and dimension for 40% less.

Does anyone know whether BMWFS cares about the tire brand as long as the dimension and spec are the same. I have the 20" OEM wheel. Thanks.

Tires just need to meet the OEM size and be of the same spec on speed and load rating and be 4/32 or better on tread and all of the same type. For instance, you can't return a car with Pirellis on the front and Michelins on the back.

Consider used tires from eBay, this has worked twice for me.

I would call your dealer and ask. I vaguely recall the tires need to be of comparable quality, or may even need the BMW approved star on them. Better to make the call and be certain rather than get dinged twice for new tires.

Won't need a BMW Star rated tire.

This is completely wrong. The tires have to be same spec as OEM and has to be a brand that is BMW approved. A same spec Kumho will not pass lease end inspection. You CAN have different tire brands front and rear as long as all other requirements are met. Must have same tire on each side of one axle.

That's a whole lot of wrong.

So, the tires do not need to be of OEM size, speed rating and load rating and you can mix and match brands. OK.

I've seen conflicting info on the BMW star rating. I know a CPO has to have BMW approved tires which are noted by the star but I could not find confirmation of this for lease turn it.

I agree it is important to have right info and I am open to correction on this and clarification.

I am trying to help based on my own experience and guidance from a friend who is a top sales rep at a large BMW center. From what he tells me and what I have experienced is that the tires do not have to be "star rated". They must be exact spec as OEM and must be a BMW approved brand. For example, my E92 m3 came with Michelin PS2's and I returned it with Bridgestone SO1 Pole Position tires. Exactly same spec as OEM and it was sold as CPO with those Bridgestone tires on it (as I was told). The Bridgestone tires are not used as an OEM M3 tire, but Bridgestone is a BMW approved brand. This is why I got away with it.

When I log into My BMW (my car is leased) and go under FAQ and then under leases this is what I find regarding tires:

"If you replace the tires, lease end charges will be assessed for each tire that is not of equal size, quality, and speed rating as your original tires. (You can find the speed rating label on the inside of the vehicle’s door jam.) Also, acceptable wear is a minimum of 4/32 of an inch of depth from the finish tread. Your Ding-O-Meter can help you to identify whether or not your tire falls within our guidelines. Your BMW Center will be able to provide you with a final, more precise measurement using a tire tread depth gauge. Tires with cuts or gouges will result in additional lease end charges. Please note: If your vehicle originally came equipped with run-flat tires, then your vehicle must be returned with run-flat tires. Otherwise you will be charged for new tires."

Yes. Mine says the same. The real determining factor is what constitutes "same quality" as OEM. My experience has taught me that if I stick with a brand that BMW uses then I am safe as long as the tire is the same spec, size, speed rating, summer max vs all season tire, ect as OEM. BMW does not consider off brands like Kumho same quality hence why that tire and ones like it will not work. I always stick to the Bridgestone, Goodyear, Pirelli, Michelin, Conti, ect. brands and I have had zero problems. Lastly, it is sometimes cheaper to pay the fee for tires rather than buy new tires to turn the car in. Always compare the fee to your per tire cost balanced and mounted and pick the cheaper of the two.

Thanks for the all comments on this topic. I think I am going to stick with Pirelli or Michellin as replacement.

Does anyone know what is the tire wear penalty? I am a borderline case so perhaps just roll the dice.

I turned in my old M6 on lease with Kumhos or something on it and was not charged for anything. Sorry, there isn't a huge difference in tire brands these days like there used to be......Kumho makes pretty good tires.

That is because the dealer decided to buy the car and BMWFS did not bother hitting you with the fee. The game has changed and nowadays you will not get away with Kumho.

I think it is 400 per tire for 20 inch wheels. Call BMWFS and they can give you the accurate amount. The amounts were revised upward last year and I do not know the current penalty for the 20 inch wheels.

Since Pirellis also are OEM they could be used as well if one has to use OEM tires on lease return.
