BMW M5 F10 with a SMALL SCREEN (I didn't know these existed)

Most of M5 F10 cars we've seen in real-life and on the internet come with this usual big-sized screen (I think it's 10.2 inches?)

But this one I've seen comes in a screen that is much smaller.

Now, one theory that I have is that this small screen (of 8 inches?) is for countries/territories where BMW DOES NOT HAVE any GPS Satellite Navigation data. Not sure if this is exactly correct or not........

Any thoughts and opinions?

Also, I'd like to know what is the name of this feature for the small screen...........because there doesn't seem to be a lot of info for it on the internet and it's very rare to find pictures of this........

Also:
Unlike the 10.2 inch screen (which is under the codename 609), there is no product codename or specific name for this 8 inch screen.......at least AFAIK.

That is weird.

Maybe only for BMW of India? Over half the population of India still lives in poverty. It could be that BMW made a cheaper version or like you said a version without navigation because the telecommunication infrastructure in India isn't that big. But GPS uses Satellites so who knows?

Bizarre. It's not India - otherwise it would be right hand drive.

the last pic is from a different car thought correct? noticed last pic doesn't have DCT. so with that in mind are you showing 2 cars with the same set up? I'm confused

I can say I have never seen anything like this before and have no idea why it would be that way. Is there any other corks about the car that you have noticed?

Yes but the part of the Indian population that can afford an M5 can also afford a proper Nav screen. This car probably costs 5x in India vs US.

Only thing I can think of is that this is from a country where GPS isn't standard and someone forgot to spec it.

Oh sorry, I forgot to specify
The last pic is from an Indian-spec 525d

But nevertheless, I only used that as an example or as a reference to illustrate how this 8 inch screen looks like when the car is 'on'.

Also, where I'm from (Philippines) all of the regular 5 series cars sold here only have this small screen..........probably because BMW does not yet have GPS map data for the Philippines.

In any case, the M5 featured here is also from the Philippines.

I was taking pictures of the car and by chance I got to meet up with the owner, asked about when he got this car and also asked him on what it was be one of LESS THAN TEN Filipinos to own an M5 F10

Eventually:
He plans to sell the car though and posted a link here:
http://www.philmotors.com/BMW-2012-Philippines8313.html

Going back though.......

I think one very plausible theory is that BMW uses the 8 inch screen for markets where BMW DOES NOT YET HAVE GPS SATNAV DATA.

As to why they do this, I'm not exactly sure.

One reason could be that it creates the necessary value and cost difference between this and 609 BMW Navigation Professional which includes the 10.2 inch screen especially in terms of production costs on the point-of-view of BMW as a manufacturer.

In a way, this is somewhat similar to what Lexus is doing for the 4th generation Lexus GS.

You have a 12.3 inch screen (which must be packaged with GPS Navigation)

and you also have an 8 inch screen (for countries without GPS navigation as well as markets which are price-sensitive/cost-sensitive AND for use in developed markets on base models and mid-end variants.........which reserve the 12.3 inch screen for top-of-the-line variant/s):

Something like that I guess.........

At least one of the F10 M5 'Ring taxis have a small screen.

If the "small" navigation is std, some might not spec the professional navigation.

I agree, the reason for some markets getting the smaller 6.5 inch control display with no Nav or option 606 BMW Business Advanced (still with 6.5 inch screen), will be purely down to sales & marketing. If the direct competition (usually MB & Audi) don't offer an option, would not make sense for BMW gave it away for free.

Audi UK spec'd basic Nav as std with the new A6 and BMW UK followed with non-M F10 LCI spec'd with option 606 as std (the pre-LCI non-Ms came with just the 6.5 inch control display with no Nav - even 550i)

UK F10 M5s come with option 609 Pro Nav as std, but there are still enough options available (before special order individual) to add £40K work of options. I am, however, surprised that 609 is not standard on M5 in Germany; that or it may be special order to save weight on the 'Ring taxi?.

I believe rear fog lights are std in European cars (may be legislative) - applies to all F10s, not just the M5, so may apply to other markets (pic above has DCT).

I know the 7-SERIES over here in the Middle East have small screens as Navigation is an option here and most don't have them. I know when you order a car here a lot of stuff that is standard in the USA are options over here.

Hmm........seems interesting but yeah I agree with what you say.

Also, take into consideration that some developing countries and emerging markets may have yet to have this kind of infrastructure ready or available.

Hence because of that, some car manufacturers may not yet have reliable mapping data for certain countries (either it's still be compiled or some other factor).

Here in the Philippines, GPS Navigation is still a new feature here.......and as such, less than 0.5% of cars sold here have them.

P.S.

Yup those 3-4 pics I posted were of an M5 =)

Anyways:
All BMW M5 F10 cars sold around the world have rear fog lamps.

EXCEPT that it is only in America and Canadian versions of the M5 where there is no rear foglight switch (US DOT rule maybe???)..........though some NA peeps here at Bimmerpost have tried modifications to add a rear fog light switch to their vehicles.

Just checked the german BMW site, and the big screen (609) is an option there, and probably in many other european countries.

IMHO, it's not a pre-production model.

The reason is that the car featured in the pictures was bought from the one and only BMW M Certified Dealership here in the Philippines.

It's a real production model though it's obviously an earlier build (pre-LCI).

I have an F10 M5 in Lebanon with no navigation but I still have the big screen (thank god I got lucky). I have seen the M5s here with small screen. To be honest, the small screen is really ugly, makes the car look much cheaper from the inside. I'm not sure why though.

That's interesting. I guess you got lucky hehe

With that said, I'd like to know more info if I may.

1) When did you purchase your car?
2) Did you get to choose which features and options you want in your vehicle? Or were you required to buy whatever you local dealer offers and just pay a fixed/standard price?

Quote:

Oh, I guess we're not alone then. So it looks like Germany, Philippines and Lebanon are some countries/territories where the small screen is the base equipment for M5 cars.

My guess is that BMW makes the 10.2 inch screen as a premium feature while the smaller screen is a base feature. It is then up to the local dealership to choose which screen they want their M5 cars to come with (depending on features-to-cost ratio, profit margin, marketability, market research, competition analysis, etc.)

I don't know if this still applies to newer builds (such as the first LCI units). Again, only BMW knows the answer.

Quote:

Personally, I wouldn't say that it's ugly.................but I would say that it is LACKING.

Sure, I'm happy the car has a display screen as standard (this is an E-segment/Executive car after all)............HOWEVER, I guess we feel that it is lacking simply because:

1) When the M5 F10 first made its WORLD PREMIERE at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the car came with the 10.2 screen. In succeeding international auto shows, the M5 cars featured all had 10.2 screen. Official BMW press photos of the car came with the 10.2 screen.
2) And in relation to the first, the M5 is THE flagship model and representative of the 5 Series model range. Hence, we naturally expect for the 10.2 inch screen for ALL M5 cars WORLDWIDE............so to see a small screen from your barebones base model 520i or 520d on some M5 cars seems somewhat dismaying.......

But hey, I guess there are some people who just want an M5 at the lowest price possible. The ones that don't need luxury features but just want M5 performance.

I guess these base model features cater to those people..........I think.

Mine is a 2012 model. So it might have been an early production of the car. Bought it from the owner of the BMW dealership (his personal car). It lacks alot of options like head up display, full leather, premium seats, but the screen is nice and big. On the other hand, the other 3 F10 M5 cars that I have seen in Lebanon (Only around 15 M5s in the whole country) all had head up display, and premium seats, but small screen.

Maybe because there is no need for navigation since there are no lanes or intersections in the desert.

Just kidding, sorry I had to.
