its funny how almost all reactions are either "I love it" or "I hate it, you are ruining the M name"

personally living up north, I wouldn't buy a M5 without AWD, if I was in the market for a big sedan I would go to Merc or Audi. Sure you can make due with snow tires, but that's no fun, snow tires with AWD and 600 HP, now that could be fun! next Gen M3/M4 with 450HP and AWD would also be welcomed.

Mercedes offers AWD as an option in a lot of markets but not the US, which is probably because the take rate on AWD here is so big, even in warmer regions people want it for the added traction/acceleration.

I see BMW offering this as an option with the next gen, if the take rate is 80/20 or higher in favor of AWD then they will probably drop the RWD option later on...

April fools?

I know it's just a mule, but it has that 'classic' xi stance that every awd bmw has. Like an elephant on roller-skates.

That car has definitely been around the block. The underside looks like it has 75,000 miles on it other than that newer part. I love the zip tie holding whatever that loop is. Glad I'm not the only one who uses them for a quick fix!

That's pretty amazing that the spy photographer was able to get under the car like that. :-)

Laying on the ground in the cold for us.. You shouldn't have !
Lots of photographer make a living on taking pictures in northern Sweden. The other plow tracks on lakes and some other run hotels etc. Should I mention that there has been quite a few swedish-german families here.

Cool... I guess? There's no doubt the want/need for AWD is there but it should be optional IMO!

That's true... new M5 AWD will be based on G30-series and will have body index F90. Fortunately there will be two versions - F90 M5 and F90 xDrive M5, for any choice

Never ceases to amaze how quick to judge everyone is over AWD. GT-R, Porsche, Lambo, Ferrari, Subaru etc. all have AWD systems and no one complains about them or their performance. It’s all in the implementation, as the head of M acknowledges that he wants M cars to remain RWD biased even if all wheels are driven. I hope it’s goes to production; power is nothing without control!

My wish list for the next M5:

1. AWD - check.

2. Hire Porsche engineers to fix steering.

3. Decrease weight by 300-400 lbs.

We need AWD M cars, about as much as we need 800+HP... oh wait...

Now all wheel capable, rear wheel dominate, I'll bite at that.

Why are some of you people so against awd ?? Some of us live where it snows , and not all of us are drifting on racetracks ! Let there be options on m2,3,4,5,6 .. Rear or all wheel ... !! I'm positive in Nyc 75% sales would be awd

yeah they need to do it like Mercedes, something like 66% power given to rear and 33% to front, and it can go up to 50/50 if needed...

Even more amazing would be if they could have it start 100% rear and give up to 50% to the font and have it be customized by the user in idrive! BMW would probably charge $5,000 for that option

Yes, I doubt BMW would allow that much user control. Nor would the "masses" utilize it. A computer would allocate the distribution according to an algorithm that determines how much input is needed, when etc... And the lemmings will drive as fast as they *limitedly* think they can.
Which is why I'll row my own boat as long as I can.
Because getting their quicker, means less time enjoying my drive.

I don't like the idea of an AWD M car or even an AWD BMW, but I understand that this is also a competition for business so I understand why AWD is being considered, but please...please...please BMW!!!! always keep a RWD version of the M5 in the near future generations.

Coming from a 2011 S4, to a 2012 M3 and now a 2015 M4 I want the next car that I add to be AWD. An AWD M5 sounds perfect to me and the other vehicles that I am currently eyeing are the Audi S3 and the Macan Turbo. I am a fan of AWD.

The closest thing we will get to experiencing something like an AWD M5 now would be the new x5/x6M models. Same engine, and I'm sure the tranny is quick despite not being a DCT.

I for one would not be surprised to see an AWD F10 M5. I really think BMW was caught off-guard by the new MB E63 and may, once again, be playing catch up. I think it may be an option sooner rather than later.

btw, while I totally respect those of you who believe AWD is anathema to true sports cars, I also understand the huge value of AWD in northern climates. And don't forget, most M5 buyers are NOT purists.

Absolutely correct imo. And BMW would steal some of MB's market share.

I agree.
M5 is really not a hardcore enthusiast's car either.
