When buying a "used" BMW F10 M5 is there a way to...
Is there a way to scan the car's odb and see how many times it has been "red-lined"?
Are there any tell-tale signs to look for when buying one of these beauties? I'm a rookie in the M world, looking for some advice from the seasoned vetrans. Thanks! |

A BMW dealer might be able to get that info for you.
With that being said, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a pre-owned M5 that hasn't been redlined numerous times. Good news is that's what these cars are designed for so usually not a concern. I would be more concerned whether it was tuned to a higher horsepower and then returned to stock for trade in or not as this could have stressed the engine and drivetrain beyond its designed operating parameters. Not all tunes but a lot of people get greedy and you never know what they did. Car starts to act funny so they trade it. If you find a good CPO car then BMW is putting their guarantee on it so no worries. I'm sure others will share their opinions. -Dave PS: CPO = Certified Pre-Owned |

99% of them would have been redlined! Nothing wrong with it... probably good for the engine to get things circulating :-)

I travel to Germany regularly and rent cars to get around. Cars are absolutely thrashed there...regularly doing 155 mph for a lot of their life. THe Nurburgring M5 Ring Taxis are thrashed for day after day.
So 100,000 miles is a lot for the engine in a German owned car which can spend a LOT of its life at full throttle. But everywhere else...... I would buy one based on a test drive, condition, service history and if you are not mechanically savvy an independant inspection. |

Thank you for the Advice.
'13 F10 M5 MT 29K FL car 1-Owner. Looks super clean all around. I do have an option for an aftermarket warranty. Anyone have experience with those? Dave- is there a way to see if the ECU/Comp was tuned for higher HP and then reset? Does the comp store a hx of the vehicle's programming past. Not quite sure what a P-car is? Thanks Neil and others' advice.
I have a shop foreman here in Texas who will be taking the car for a spin. Carmax has a 5 day return policy and they have some sort of aftermarket warranty called MaxCare. Lets see how things play out? I may end up getting that. $500 deductible though. Some of the other "top rated" carriers flat out said "No" aftermarket warranties for the M5. Maybe if you can get ahold of the owners manual for that car it may have the previous owners name in it and you can google him/her to try to get an idea how they would treat a car. A Facebook page showing a young punk doing a bunch of smokey burnouts and racing would be a warning. A page showing a doctor with a bunch of family photos would be a warm fuzzy. Not a 100% guarantee but a warm fuzzy. Other than that it's a roll of the dice. Even if you're on good terms with that dealership they want to move that car so they'll say whatever they need to to sell it. However, like was stated before: if the car runs and drives nice then it's probably okay even if it was tuned as these cars are designed to take a good amount of abuse. Also, most M5s are never tuned. But alot on this forum are. Good luck. |

I never even understood the P car over rev thing. Like why would you design a car that allows an over rev? And even if you hit redline, who cares? Do you drive a GT3 just to get groceries? You should expect a GT3 to be driven hard.

I actually went to the dealership to ask if they could read the launch control count off the ECU before buying the car. Similar reasoning. I figured... if they used launch control 100 times the longevity of the drivetrain may be an issue.
Guess what... the dealership refused to read it for me. They said it's a privacy issue. |

I've never heard of a red line counter. LC counter for sure, but very few people have ever been able to get BMW to pull it.
Most BMWs used to have an overrev flag you could see through entering the test mode on the dash. Once it is set, your warranty is over. On a DCT it isn't possible to overrev AFAIK so they don't have this flag on this car. That's mainly a manual gearbox issue where the driver downshifts to too low a gear. |
