BMW M5 F10 - Where is it coming from (Oil Leak)
Good Day Bimmer boys,
I have been losing lot of oil lately and have to top up oil every week. So I have lifted the car and took out the cover under the engine off to find the the leakage shown in the picture. Any ideas of where it came from? Is it oil pan gasket or front crankshaft seal or something else?

A mess and with all the sand sticking to it also.Looks like a sump gasket to me as the block portion above seems to be clean though I wouldn't absolve the c/shaft seal entirely.Oil pipe unions would have to be checked also for security and if they are not fractured.
Presume oil cooler area is clear? |

Start engine revving it a little and have someone observe if there is an obvious leak from a particular place, the subframe does block the view to an extent I'm afraid.

Yeah I was shocked to see that amount of mess also when I have removed the cover. Didn't expect to see that as I have not noticed any oil spots underneath my driveway. But I was advised that this is the crank shaft and the reason why it didn't accumulate near the crank shaft is because when oil leaks from the crank it splashes down and from the sides due to air passing through while driving. I already scheduled an appointment with a garage to have the car checked because leak that magnitude worries me lot

This issue is expensive to fix because of the labour charges. The seal cost me around $40 but the labour cost will be looking at ~$550 because the entire front of the car has to come off (coolant, radiator, belts, polly, etc..) just to get to the crank. So I'm hoping that it's an oil pan issue because this will be a much easier problem to deal with

Usually take mine to Bmw for anything underneath like that but they look like oil pipe oil unions from the oil cooler. But wait no, it's a support for the pipes and the nut looks as if it supports the oil pan also,it's in the same line as the other nuts but could be wrong.

Follow the leak to it's highest point. Next step is to clean all of that crap off and get to clean metal. Then drive the car for a day or two and recheck. Could be front seal on the crank as mentioned. Could be something between the crank and the AC compressor. It doesn't look to me like the pan gasket is leaking. Too much oil above the seam.
Please follow up on this post once you have it repaired! Good luck |

What I did is having all front and back crank shaft seals replaced along with the oil pan gaskets replaced just to make sure that I will not have any leakage. All is good now however, another issue is now there with oil somehow getting into my combustion and smoking from the exhaust my assumption it's getting to the intake through the PCV valve even though they just have been replaced.
