M5 F10 concerns

I am thinking about upgrading from my 2008 335i to a 2013 M5. I was wondering is there any major problems on this model I should worry about? Like the m5 e60 with the v10, where it had major issues and they were outrageous price to fix.

Yes. Many documented problems with the MY13. I would look at MY14 and above. I recently bought a MY15 and love it!

Picked up a 2013 non comp fully loaded 5 months ago 38k, only issues I've had is leaky coolant lines, fresh out of the dealership yesterday because of that actually, can't know if fully remedied for another few days. I don't regret my decision but I pulled the trigger a bit too son because of the good deal I was getting.

If I were to do it again, I'd get a 14' LCI. A few cosmetic differences, not much on the performance end. If looking for more of a daily then get a non comp, with a simple tune it's almost a different car. Comp didn't seem worth it and still doesn't seem worth it for another 3-6k extra.

But as far as "major issues" my car has never had one. Not the previous owner and myself. Still not really sure what the major mechanical differences are between a 13' and 14' LCI.

I had an E60, I didn't have major issues with the car, it was rock solid. I made sure car has service history and I did keep up with preventive maintenance. Now the F10 is whole another animal, in a good way. I love how comfortable the car, has lots of nice amenities, and you have hp/torque readily available. You will hit triple digit speed in no time.

If you scroll through the forum, you will hear about people blowing their motor, DCT malfunction, turbo oil line leaking etc but that's with any automobile forum. Most of the topic is about people having issues with their car and they need a place for rant/suggestion/fix

I say, do a thorough inspection before purchasing the vehicle, make sure maintenance is up to date, do some preventive maintenance and enjoy the car. I miss the screaming V10 but I won't go back to E60.

Have had a '13 M5 with good history well over two years with no issues. Don't listen to those who say get a '14 and above as they are mechanically identical just spending more on the different internal headlight profile,I personally prefer the thinner round ringlets.
The life of any M5 of any year depends on how it was treated in its early life and some people find it's diligent to change the much referred to rod bearing shells at around 65000 miles as a preventative measure.
Remember with a cp spec you will have a harsher ride, I wanted comfort and some owners of the non cp finding the front a little high have fitted the front cp springs to lower the height a little to have the best of both worlds.

I purchased a 2014 LCI Competion Model (30K Km) almost 2 years ago with a genuine Bmw Service Record & Platinum Extended Warranty (and complete Service Record with 100 point Car Check before Sale).

As always with a M Car a Complete Service History and extended Warranty give Peace Of Mind.

This was my First M Car but not my first Bmw and have had no problems at all .

Really lovely car to drive and when I want it a “wolf in sheep’s clothes” !

I am also pedantic about oil and filter changes (Mobil 1 0W-40) once a year and any preventative maintenance.
Car has been Serviced regularly by a small Bmw Dealership and I have a really good Service Advisor and Manager at the Dealership.

Also beware of the modding with no upgrades to the mechanical internals and respect the design limitations (as with anything mechanical).

I won’t buy any performance car without complete documentation and service history .

I'm curious, exactly what problems on 2013? I'm pushing 100,000 miles and over the past 50k all I can recall is routine maintenance you'd have on any car.

People always put a stigma on prefacelift M5's from every generation. It's really just the year where more nuances to the car are discovered and then some of them are addressed from the factory for the subsequent years. Turbo coolant hose leak can happen on any year car. Forums say the 2013's have more oil burning than newer cars but I don't think that's firmly substantiated. For what it's worth, my 2013 has been very reliable. I had 2 of the coolant hoses start to seep in the 12,000 miles I've driven the car (up to 63k now). My engine burns 1 quart between 5k interval oil changes. I'd say that's pretty good!

If you're after aesthetics and cosmetic looks, then focus on 2014+. If you're looking for a 6MT throw everything out the window and warm yourself the potential of having to buy a 2013 because most of the 6MT's were built in 2013.

I did exactly what OP is considering... 2008 335i -> 2013 M5. I love it. It's a bigger car for sure, but it handles better. Certainly very fast. I'm quite happy with how it sounds with the windows down. Windows up it's harder to hear the exhaust, but I don't want to annoy the neighbors with a stupid loud exhaust. Performance wise, obviously it's way faster. I find the iDrive is current enough, but clearly not as good as the most recent 7-series / F90 stuff. Being in Arizona, having really really powerful AC is great.

I have only had the coolant lines leak (even though the recall was done) so the dealer re-did the repair. Other than that, I haven't had any issues at all. Burns very little oil, less than a quart in a year with ~5k miles.

Only problem is for some reason rear tires don't seem to last very long

mechanically: in (11,12not in usa)& 13's the coil packs, coolant lines, oil pumps, fuel pumps and injectors were issues and recalled and then upgraded for LCi models(14,15,16)as well as some gasket and seals other than just the turbo coolant lines

15&16s got stronger dct clutches.

cosmetically: 14,15,16 have the new headlights(although it must have led/lighting pkg) u can still get the lesser halogen/hid round halo light headlight in all years.

slighty different taillights, and the LCi steering wheel which is a must to me because the pre-Lci steering wheel is not pretty and your wrist always hits the buttons when turning. so: ugly and cumbersome

i would wait and find a 14+... just my two cents, but youll thank me if u listen

No matter what anyone says, a motor that is running in order will not burn oil. if a motor burns oil, oil is getting past seals it is not meant to.

if your car is burning a quart in 5k miles, the problem isnt as bad as 1qt in less than 1k miles, but its still bad

i hopefully have a healthy one as i havent gotten the 'add 1 quart' message yet

but i also change my oil every 3k miles. and not with 0w-30

I guess I should say, I've never had to add oil or gotten the message in 2.5 years. I only drive it 5k/year so I can't say if it might have burned some in that time.

The iDrive oil level display is always the same, but I have NO clue if that is accurate at all or not.

My 2013 has been the most reliable car of the 50 or so cars in my life. Keep in mind, the engine was in the X5M/X6M beforehand so nothing new there.

yea they learned a few things. thats awesome to hear about yours' reliability

they def upgraded a few parts and added power as well as they have different engine codes S63b44O0 for x5/6m ...and m5 has s63b44T0(s63tu) tu -technical upgrade
