Another blown engine. Texas heat sucks .

We got another engine under way. Old engine put 3” hole in the block. Cylinder 5 decided to come out . We got a replacment engine and put some upgraded rods in it. This was running 26+ psi .

i went to an indy shop about 2 years ago and they had an x5m motor on display in the entrance that had the same thing happen. big ol' hole

the owner owned an e60 m5 too by the way lol.

Couple Q's :
what is our stock psi? 18?

what makes a piston jump out the motor like that?

The temps have actually been really mild for June here in Central Texas, but I know the humidity is always higher out there in the Houston bay area. I've seen similar holes in engine blocks like that before in the C6 Corvette Z06 LS7 community when a valve (usually the Ti intake) dropped. In the F10 M5 S63B44T0 (S63TU), we have Garrett MGT2260DSL turbos with a max boost of 22 psi; (up from 17.5 psi in the X5 and X6 M S63B44O0 with Garrett MGT2260SDL.)

From Steve Dinan's shop Carbahn Autoworks on the S63.

Quote:
From stock, the S63 engine is not designed for a large increase in boost. CarBahn Autoworks has designed a high-performance engine to handle very high outputs by utilizing higher quality racing Carrillo connecting rods and forged CP pistons.

The stock engine’s compression ratio is relatively high due to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards which push for consistently higher fuel economy in cars and trucks. However, this increased compression limits engine performance with higher boost settings by decreasing the size of the fuel-air charge in the combustion chamber, forcing the ignition timing to retard far below MBT (Mean Best Timing, the theoretical optimal ignition timing). Therefore, the CARBAHN Autoworks S63 engine has 0.5 less compression to optimize the engine for the increased boost. In an emissions-legal street car, the lowered compression has the added benefit of reducing catalyst inlet temperatures and improved drive-ability on pump gas.

I make that around 45mm bare outlets diameter when the standard bare outlets are around 69 to 71mm and the engine may have struggled to expel the gases through the too small openings. I'd affix the original system back on when the motor is done.
