Funny because C63 fans said the same thing when the the C63 was losing all the track comparisons to the M3.

Has anyone noticed that the new M5 also doesn't have a sunroof or have the option of CF?

+1900kg ??? are you kidding me ?
Mercedes has taken a big step forward in matters of track performance. And the sound is incredible. Right now i drive a C63 and the sound is so much better than any other car. My E60 M5 i drove before sounded like a "normal" car compared to that. Now i wouldnt care about the sound too much if performance was way better but where is M going? Right now im waiting for SportAutos Supertest on the Nordschleife. This will tell the truth... |

a lot of positives from the M5 there. I am a little surprised by the Merc also. But def would chose the M5 any day of the week.

Is this the twilight zone?
The Benz is lighter, better handling, and has less power. The BMW is heavier, worse handling, has more power. The Benz is quicker with less HP. The scripts have officially flipped. |

The very first and the very last paragraph sum it up for me. Autocar feels like there should be more DRAMA, and because the M5 is less drama (..not to be confused with less performance), they chose the Merc. It's subjective rather than objective.

The M5 is the better performing car. Their issue is that they feel the Merc is less soft and more drama, and the M5 is TOO refined.

i dont believe the writer actually meant the Merc handles better than the M5, just that it feels that way. Merc dialed up the fun factor for its saloon and like he said, every moment in the car is an event. Tons of torque and a tight steering ratio will do that. Time will reveal the M5 is best through corners. Only comparable German performance rival would be the Panamera. Another car criticized for it's lack of emotion and in my opinion, not an attractive vehicle.

I disagree - I think weight IS the problem. And overall size, wheelbase of the f10 platform. Just throwing on more electronic nannies to minimize body roll is not as good as a lighter, shorter car.
What's crazy now is that new MBs are uniformly getting better reviews in regards to steering feel and handling, while BMWs are uniformly getting worse reviews. Who woulda thunk?

Its really too bad that they left out the E63's G-Force meter, which iterferes with the car's ECU when the threshhold is breached.
Been at several track events where even a Black Edition AMG was towed off track due to limp mode from...none other than "Lateral Force Limit Exceeded" code. Where the hell are the 20" M5 wheels? Cmon...this is total BS. I wish magazines would disclose their "sponsors" at the beginning of an article. This one polishes the Jaguar's ego as if the guy who owns the magazine company is Mr. Tata himself. (tata motors India) Ive driven the E63 on the track. I gotta say it is a HUGE improvement over the previous model...which was more like a Merc (rolling living room). However, even an E39 M5 is a far better driving car...even with 120k miles. Get outta here with this nonsense. BMW is the ultimate driving machine 365 days a year. |

I've had my doubts about the new M5 and while the initial reviews were great, this is pretty disappointing.
Keep in mind that the E63 did NOT have the AMG Performance Package which would have made it faster. Also, it's my understanding that an LSD is also an option. Lets hope BMW does better with the M6/M6 Gran Coupe. MB has definitely been on the up and up lately. Jag, what a joke. |

The king of all sedans loses for what it’s stood for since inception, it’s unmatched driving experience and to top it off it was intentionally by design!!! What is this world coming to?
BMW, obviously you have an excellent car here by all means but you are headed in the wrong direction and contradicting your core values from the formula which made you who you are today. Stick to your roots, and stay focused on what got you here. Lets hope this "almost too refined feeling" doesn't make its way into the new M3, but I'm doubtful it won't. |

After reading James May's test drive of the M5, I come out thinking that he too wasn't that impressed. Yes the M5 is fast but it looked like BMW put the emphasis on comfort and looks.

You guys must remember that initial reviews of the mighty M3 E92, the car lost many times against the competition, for instance against Audi RS4 and C63. But some time later its a winner and a favorite among auto journalists.
Just wait and see, after the warm-up of the new M5 it will start being the favorite within auto journalists. Just like the M3 |
