I'm sorry but I think it's ridiculous to give up on this car without even seeing it in real life yet. I can also say that the E9x M3 is the most "sell out" M3 out of all of them. The e92 ///M3 never went into limp mode from two laps on the track. I don't need to drive it, I drove a GTR, and there is no chance I would buy that over the slower 996 or 997 or e46 or e92 ///M3.

I don't think you understand what regulations are. Please google "EPA". As much as people complain about "HP & TQ" wars I would bet a single dollar that many people would not buy a BMW unless it was producing numbers relative to it's competitors. People are suckers for numbers, and BMW understands that.

However, due to various government mandates in various countries it is important that BMW, and every other manufacturer, start producing more efficient engines. The easiest way to do this is forced induction. More power, better fuel economy (potential). It's simple. It has nothing to do with soul.

Is anyone else a bit dissapointed with 444 wheel hp in a 4300 pound car? I am not defending the e60 on this post but wasn't it putting down 430-440 hp bone stock on a variety of dynos? Would be nice if this shop dynoed a e60 m5 to illustrate the real difference.

+1 The combination of power and fuel economy is amazing with forced induction. Let's not even start talking about after market tuning. Simple piggyback tunes make 335i's keep up with M3's. All for about 500 dollars. Crazy vaule.

And the E92 M3 is not an M5 either! A big executive sedan that has to meet so many more criteria than an M3 (space, comfort, technology...)

Nor was it tested in South Africa during middle of the summer at a very high elevation (please also note that the CLS63 that it was tested with also overheated).

So if someone handed all these nay-sayers keys to a 911 Turbo (think 993, 997, future 991), you guys would automatically say no thanks because they are boosted?

Everyone is entitled to their opinions obviously, but IMHO, these are flawed until you actually experience the car.

Without being a nay-sayer, I will have to admit that if someone parks a 911 Turbo and a 911 GT3 RS 4.0 in my driveway and tells me I can only have one, and I can't test them out first, well, there's not even a remote chance I will pick the turbo. Now, maybe if I were allowed to test I will like the Turbo more. Who knows. I doubt it, but I won't say it can't happen.

I agree people should reserve final judgement until they experience the car(s).

But, then that's what the gas guage is for after all. I don't see a guage in the M5 that shows you the HPFP is about to go. But hey, at least there's a temp guage so you have some warning when its about to go into limp mode.

The m3 really has gotten a bad name for mpg when in reality it is really no different than a 335 driven in a similar aggressive fashion.

Highway cruising at 75 you get 25 mpg in the m3 v. 28 in the 335.

Combined driving aggressively m3 gets 16-17, and the 335 is 17-18.

It actually has been within 1mpg of my 6 cylinder non-turbo bmw from a few years back.

I personally wouldnt care if it was a lot worse but that is probably the biggest surprise of owning this car. I guess when the bar is set SO low, anything decent is a really unexpectly good surprise!

I agree with you. I'd rather have a gt3 over the turbo bc they are na and rwd, two characteristics that are unbeatable in terms of pure driving fun.

BUT i don't dislike turbo cars. I would take a ferrari f40 over a ferrari f50 despite it being a twin turbo. Really just depends on what you're looking for. My main problems with turbos is it's just another part that can break and cause headaches. I grew up with a turbo passat and it was nice but the turbo always had issues. Same thing with my friend's saab.

I don't know why people are ripping on the e60 though. That v10 is insane and they are still plenty fast. is the f10 better? of course, it should be better it's supposed to be the next evolution.

Weight is a BMW problem not necessarily an //M car problem... So I can definitely agree with that but do keep in mind that weight adds to the solid feel of a car which BMW being a luxury car needs.

uhh its closer to 30% and i'm super confused how this assumption has been made. Its not out of the ordinary for n54 owners to put down 420-450+ hp at the wheels (through an open diff no less) and we typically assume between an 18-20% loss in power from engine through crank etc.

Are we underestimating the power our engines are actually making??

I have one question for the F10 M5 savvy on this board: Due to that wonky Active Sound Design (or whatever it is called), if someone buys an M5 and then proceeds to modify the exhaust, will they still hear the recording of the stock M5 exhaust in the cabin? That would be very odd.

Unless exhaust mfg.'s come out with a way to reprogram the active sound crap, I would say probably...

I would try to find a way to just get rid of it. Quite or loud, actual sound > sound track IMO...
