Great Christmas indeed. I'm quite surprised the gap between the M3 CRT and M5 is so little considering the M3 is more track focused. Either way great to see all the current M vehicles.

quite frankly, i was thinking the same thing, but then probably not...... i have recently ordered an M3 and this review would have made no difference to my decision. these are 2 different cars. so different set of buyers. plus I wouldnt base my decision on one track time (or any track times for that matter although they do help me in the overall assessment of the cars dynamics). I am no track expert, but just looking at the track layout, I was almost anticipating the M3 to nail this given the fast sweepers and the straight. so the 1M beating the M3 was a bit of a surprise to me......but, like I said, I am no track expert...... an awesome test though....... this is like a 'M'orgasm..... lol..... |

Surprised that the E60 m5 finished last out of all of those. Goes to show the advancements in just the last 6 years.

How in God's name was the 1M faster than the M3 DCT? Must have been a tight track, benefiting the 1M's torque advantage over the M3. Otherwise the M3's high end would have crushed it on a faster track. Props to the 1M, but am I missing something?

So the M5 is once again the most impressive car here. It's the heaviest of the pack by far yet it only loses by 1.5 seconds to a full blown track car on semi slicks. Even the 1M beats the M3 dct lol...
Turbo motors are showing their skills here... Get out of here with that E60 M5, two tank SUV's beat it.

I am not surprised about the hierarchy here; new M5 should be the fastest "non-special series" M car and it is. The 1M is also not a big surprise, we already know that at certain tracks it is faster than an M3, DCT or not, like it was so in Hockenheim in the Sport Auto Super Test. However, if the track was really including some long straights and fast sweepers like another reader posted earlier, than a stock 1M being clearly faster than a DCT Comp. Pack M3 Coupe is really an achievement. Yet, we all know now after various dyno runs that stock 1Ms have around 360 to 380 hp rather than 340 (the official figure) and more importantly it has around 550 to 570nm of torque starting low down which puts it very close in hp and way ahead in torque compared to E9X M3. Factor it in the weight advantage as well as more compact dimensions with a shorter wheel base, the result seems to be more expected than a surprise. It shows that despite the lack of torque and heaviness M3's magnificent V8 and the Comp. chassis with DCT really works to its limits by staying with the 1M in certain tracks and being even faster in others (Ring).
The other details that are of interest for me is the huge gap between two generations of M5s and how close, almost identical the M3 Sedan (my favourite M3) is to the coupe. The SUVs also did an admirable job compared to V10 M5. We may not love them but they are engineering marvels. Ah, since I just received my set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports today and very curious to mount them ASAP, I can't help but wonder what if both the 1M and F10 M5 carry the same shoes, e.g. the Super Sports in this test! The M5 does, 1M has the older PS2s, is it too far to go that, with the same tires 1M would be annoyingly (to some) closer to the mighty M5? I bet M5 would still be faster than any 1M or M3 but maybe at a distance of half a second max. Just reflections, no arguments. I love them all, maybe the 1M slightly closer to my heart after this |

The E60 M5 is .2 slower to 60mph than the F10. I smell a rat and I just dont believe the 2 SUVs were faster. The F10 is critised widely for lack of grip and frankly iI want to see a race driver do this test, not a magazine writer.

Yeah, the 1M doing that well and the E60 doing that poorly (in comparison) doesn't seem right

Can we all agree that the little twerp-of-a-car is deserving of the M badge? With the same tires it would be frighteningly close to the F10M5... at half the price!

P.S. I give the 1M a LOT of props. I've always liked the car, and I'm glad to see that it is performing extremely well. |

Did they comment on which tires each car had? As you all know that can make a huge difference. The F10 should be on PSS, which are definitely better than the contisports offered on some vehicles. Not to take away from the M5, impressive time, just wondering which tires each car had to make a more fair comparison of lap times. |

I agree. I've raced my friends stock E60 M5 from a 30mph roll in my stock X6M (closed course) and he crushed me within seconds. I find it hard to believe the E60 M5 lost to either M SUVs, not to mention the M3 losing to the 1M. Something magical about those twin turbo engines maybe...

Some other data from FastestLaps
Sport Auto With less weight and more torque, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise the 1M can best M3 in smaller & tighter courses. |
