High-pitch chirping from engine bay (not the normal injector noise)

I have a 2013 M5. Recently started hearing a high-pitched chirping at idle. Initially thought it was a bad idler pulley but after peeking around the engine bay with the engine running, it seems to be coming from the 2nd bank high pressure fuel pump. Is this a common issue? How difficult is the replacement of one of those pumps?

Chirping? as in it cuts in and out very quickly? that sounds like a bad belt or steering pump

If it was a continuous whine type of noise I'd tell you that's 100% just your dct pump, i hear that especially when it's cold.

But for chirping I can't really imagine what that could be besides some belts.

Ya I would get it diagnosed correctly first.
Don't throw parts at it.

Was able to speak to some people elsewhere and was able to get a video to them. They suspect it may be the cam follower / lifter for the high pressure fuel pump. $40 OEM part and a $5 gasket. Going to give it a try next week just for peace of mind as I'd hate to hurt a cam and we'll go from there. Comes and goes for me as well.

Give this a try let me know if you can't view the videos. Kind of hard to hear the higher-pitched screeching over the normal injector/pump tick. Sounds like a squeaky pulley but it's definitely coming right from the pump area and not the front of the engine unless there's something it could be coming from right under the passenger side airbox.

From the video it does sound like it's the HPFP,
Do you have access to any data logging to see fuel pressure from the pumps, it might be failing.
And also to help you pin point that kind of noise see if you can get you hands on a automotive stethoscope it will help a lot

Would this cause you to get drive train malfunction during hard acceleration? I get that message once in a while randomly while cruising and mashing gas hard

Definitely can, if your HPFP is falling below the set threshold it will trigger the check engine light.
But usually you will feel sluggish feeling under hard excel like no power.
Have you scanned it what code is it setting?

So the drive train malfunction has happened to me a total 3 times. It happens when I'm cruising like highway speed and then downshift and rev it out. It does run rough and check engine does go on. I turn it off and then back on and the car is fine and no codes . I've tried to bring it to bmw and they didn't read any codes either . Each time the malfunction went off was a month apart. My whine noise like in the video above happens intermittently and sometimes it's really loud and sometimes it's impossible to notice

Honestly buddy I would find a nice shop that specializes in bmw or German vehicles in general not necessarily a dealership, I find private shops have way better attention to detail and get it looked at before it creates a bigger problem. Hopefully not but I'm just saying, also if you haven't cleared the codes they will be stored in the computers memory so maybe get it scanned see if there's anything in there It will point you in the right direction possibly

So I just replaced the fuel pump cam lifter. I don't think it was my pump as I discovered the pumps have already been replaced. The lifter replacement wasn't difficult and took 20 minutes. The lifter that came out of the engine didn't appear defective. For what it's worth, the car hasn't made any sounds since but it was a bit intermittent so time will tell whether this fix has worked long-term.

Let me know if the noise persists, will keep looking into it if it is.

So far so good. Odd because the old lifter that came out seemed fine but the problem was definitely getting worse by the day before I did the job and it hasn't returned since.

It sounds like that when I'm inside the car, chirping. But maybe its the blower noise?
