M5 vs M6 GC

NOTE!!! This is not to start an argument! I'm looking to make a switch from this money pit I'm in right now and have a hard time deciding which one to get on the used market.

I'm curious why some of you guys chose the M5 over the M6 GC? I know the GC wasn't available as a 2013 model year car so I know why the "early" adopters got the M5. Just curious what made the 2014 and newer purchasers get the M5 over the GC since the price is not that far apart at that price point. What's another $15K between friends, right?

This is also a question to the guys that purchased them used. 2014 M5s and GCs are ~$10K price difference...if that. This is where I'm at. Simply can't afford a new one and keep both kidneys at the same time.

So, is it the price difference? Looks? Performance? Practicality?

I know the M5 is a bit lighter but from what I understand the GC is a bit quicker. Both look great but I think I'll leaning towards the GC in this regard. Ability to tune should be same? M5 is probably more practical with real rear seats.

Please chime in. I'm really curious why you guys went one way vs. the other...and let's keep it civil.

Thanks!

Both a great cars! M5 is more practical as it is gas 5 seats and the GC only has 4 seats.

You can get some amazing deals on M5's right now. Tuning is exactly the same on both cars. GC has a little bit lower center of gravity and wider rears.

My vote would be M5 with CP model year 14 and up.

m6GC is the best looking bmw imo.

i'd be in one if it wasn;t for the terrible lease rates a couple of months ago.

do it.

I'd say price, agility, and practicality, in that order, is what made me get the M5 over the GC.

I've owned both and am now searching for another M5. My GC was manual and fun as hell to drive, kinda long though and felt heavier though not sure it is/was. M5 ('13) with dct was really fuckn fast.

Looks, well, originally felt the 6 was best looking but after a while, I now think the 5 is the more combination of sport and muscle. Both are awesome. Which ever you go with, you will not regret it.

IMO the current 6 er is the most beautiful BMW ever made. And M6 is the most beautiful 6 er; however I personally prefer Coupe and then Gran Coupe, but if I wanted to pick M5 or M6 GC I would go with M5. As some members said it's more practical because has one more usable seat, more room on back seat and better head room. It's also about 4" shorter (length) and a bit lighter. In addition it's less expensive. Now if you don't need 4 doors , I would say get M6 Coupe but if you need 4 doors and room for back seat passengers then M5 is more suitable car. M6 GC is too big an heavy and to me is not a fun car at all but is classy and beautiful.

M6GC, is a beautiful car hands down with sexy lines. IMO both cars are heavy which is no big deal to me because they're useless on the track. I actually prefer a car with 4 seats, and I have not seen a M5 with 5 people in the rear unless you have small kids. Personally 3 adults in the rear would not be comfortable, and that's why they make SUV'S. Good luck with your choice GC hands down.

M5's seats are so thick that the rear passenger's legroom isn't really that much bigger than the M3's.

13 was an early one for me m6gc was not out yet , its a beauty and prolly would've gotten one this time round when ordering the 16 but...the identical stickers w same opt's was way more than 10k was more like a 25-30k diff which puts it out've my range , if i was buy'n used then i'd prolly be all over one !

2nd f10 m5 and 5th m5 , no matter what way you go you wont be disapointed !!

I've had a 14 & now 16 M5 and the M6GC was never considered. I know I am in the minority but I have never liked the overall look. From the front yes but from the side and rear 3/4 absolutely not it just visually seems too long to me similar to a Panamera. Just looks like a stretched M6 how a Panamera is a stretched 911. I would have loved to get an M6 but like the practicality of 4 doors

The M5 is a tad bit lighter at 4387lbs vs the m6GC at 4430lbs as listed on BMW website. However, options and wheel packages will also influence those numbers. For me, weight difference was not that big of a concern. They are both heavy cars.

BMW actually lists the M6GC faster off the blocks but again, very minute difference.

The M6 is wider & lower but longer, particularly the front which can be a nuisance when going up\down steep gradients especially if lowered. Scraped my front lip a few times.

The M5 does have more head room if you are a taller person and can seat 5 so more practical in that sense.

As you are looking at both M5 and M6GC, I assume you need a four door car.
I didn't have M6GC before, but had 650GC. When I had that car, if I adjust driver's seat to my comfortable seat position, then there will be impossible to have an adult male sits behind me. For your references, I am 6'11 and 200lbs.
The M5's rear seat space was also not that kind of good, if I am sitting comfortably at my driver seat, then there will be not much leg room left for the driver side passenger.
Personally, most people go for m5 for space and convenience, and choose m6gc for styling reasons.
If you need carries four people always, then M5 might be a better choice. Otherwise, if you just need a four door occationlly, M6GC would be the ultimate choice.

I also was conflicted between the M5. Here are some of the pros and cons for both.
M5 pros: More room in the rear plus a usable 3rd seat in the back. Also not as big of a deal but most of the M5s i've been in have automatic closing trunks unlike the GC. Also more people own m5s so you can find parts cheaper and easier.
Cons: Not as good looking imo, Interior seems more dated compared to the newer Ms.

M6GC pros: Best looking modern BMW imo. Interior is extremely nice. The carbon roof looks bad ass on the GC. Absolutely quicker stock for stock than the F10. Lower center of gravity.
Cons: Can realistically only fit 2 people in the back. Kinda hard to get in an out of the car compared to the F10.

I went with the GC and have loved every second of it. Good luck!

I went M5 because:
Three seat belts in back - kids have friends.
More subdued looks - blends in with other cars on road (I like sleepers).
Shorter overall length - both of these cars are really long, I wanted shorter.

I think the GC is by far a better looking car. Also LOVE the carbon fiber roof with no sunroof and would have taken that in my M5 if available.

Based on your profile, you already have an X5M. I'd like to think of an X5M as the SUV version of the M5 and conversely, X6M would be the SUV version of the M6 GC.

I owned an F10 before getting into an M6 GC. I thought hard about the M5, but what pushed me towards the M6 GC are:
Exterior - hands down, as mentioned ad nauseam, best looking BMW to date.
Interior - I find the interior of the M6 GC more appealing and luxurious than the M5; especially in an individual full merino leather.

I understand there are cons to M6 GC, but that's why there are also M5s, X5Ms, X6Ms, etc. Either way, you really cannot go wrong. It's more of a personal preference.

This will be a highly personal decision
Before getting M5 I was lucky to get the invitation to a BMW event with half a day dedicated to autocross. M3, M4, M6 and M6GC. Clearly M3/4 was the winner but I was deeply impressed with M6 capabilities given it's weight. Didn't really like GC given it's length.
Half year later it was time for me to exchange my e90 M3 for a something different and I was dead set on M6. My daughter shuttered this by innocently sating that there simply is no place for her legs It is unbelievable that for a such large car it had not only less space compared to e90 but also to e46 I had before. I test drove M5CP and was impressed but dealership didn't have GC to look at side by side. Couple of weeks later less then a year old GC in SO for a great price showed up on the market but after playing with it I was convinced that M5 is a better car for me. 18 months later I'm still happy with the choice, GC's profile is way too long for my taste.

I've only seen the two on separate occasions but never side by side. I know that the GC is about 4" longer. Does it make that much difference visually?

Holy shit your 6'11?!? I don't think you'd be comfortable sitting in the back of any car

am 6'1 just test drove an M6 given how ungodly cheap they are. I mean 15k more gets you a solid 13/14 year than an e92 M3 with good options and lower miles which is nuts lol

First thing I noticed is how long the front is. I don't remember my m5 feeling that long in the front.

Personally with how many 5 series there are and how few GC M6s there are I like the idea of trying the 6 vs. the 5 again.

That said as mentioned before and over and over in the price comparison / deal section.

These cars that had 110-156k stickers are ABSOLUTE bargains right now especially what are likely 1 owner well serviced, low abuse cars. The only thing I'd caution as good as some of these cars look in the 50k range they still have lots of room to fall so plan accordingly lol.

*I sat in the back seat of the M6 during the test drive since I routinely would have lots of people with me on any given weekend. I fit and it was a tad more comfortable than a GTR but not by much. Its survivable but not something I'd readily jump in to sit in the back seat of, not sure how that compares to an M6 GC backseat tho

The M6GC was my first option but I couldn't find the color combo I wanted with the equipment for that end of the year discounts.

That led me to the M5.

M6 GC backseat is definitely roomier than the coupe.
