cylinder 5 misfire

I had drivetrain malfunction pop up yesterday just read the codes with a maxi scan tool and apparently I have cylinder 5 misfire. I was going to change all coils and plugs anyway as I’m at 70k and hasn’t been done in my ownership of 20k miles. Looking online there’s loads of different plugs and coils listed for this car. Not sure which ones to get. Can any of the U.K. guys point me in the right direction? I’m going to give this job a go myself

Are you stock or tuned??? Think the plug/gap can change depending on which you are????? :

Bosch ZR5TPP330- Will be perfect. I even ran them with the standard gap even though I'm stage 2 tuned. It's about that time again and I'll run the same Bosch plugs.

I'm a fan of the NGK 97506 plugs, gapped to 0.022", but I am tuned.

As far as coils go it depends on year. Bosch for earlier cars, Delphi for later ones.

Good luck, let us know how it progresses and what tools are needed.

Guys I wanted to monitor this issue a bit longer because after clearing the fault codes the can ran fine again for a while. Then I had cylinder 5 misfire again. I reset and had cylinder 1 misfire a couple of times and now cylinder 6 a couple of times. Only under high load. And now I can’t reset at all. Not had any smoke or anything and the car will still run in limp mode as I had to get home from work but with no power obviously. Should I still change all the plugs and coils??

I'd get a proper diagnostic carried out by a competent garage (not necessarily a BMW dealer, plenty of very good indie specialists out there), rather than a basic cheapo scan like you're using and then clearing the fault codes and hoping they don't come back

If they haven’t been done in a while I’d definitely change plugs and coils.

Yes change them!! As you've said earlier they've been in for 20k plus miles..... definitely need them changing regardless of the fault

Bit of an update chaps I changed all the plugs and coils reset all the codes and just have cylinder six injector codes now and the car is still in limp mode. I have bought 8 new injectors and im letting my indy (darren woods) do the work. Its twenty miles away takes about 25mins, would it be ok to drive there in limp mode. Warnings are in yellow not red?

Personally I wouldn't, but then my best mate has got a recovery business (we're a bit far away from you though!)

So I had all 8 injectors replaced. Still a misfire. Had a compression test. All good thank god. So I’ve been told the failed injector sent a spike back to the ecu and fried something in there. Both ECU checked and one of them is being repaired!

Hi Jonny,

I have the same issue. Replaced all coils, plugs, and one injector (coded it) and still have misfires on all cylinders in bank 1.

What was repaired on your DME/ECU? Was it the MOSFETS?

Thank you.

Hi I don't know what was repaired inside the ECU I was just told the bad injector sent a spike back to one of the ECU's and damaged something inside. The one bad ECU was removed and sent to specialist, repaired and refit and the car has been faultless since.
