New 13’ M5 Owner (possibly)

Hello all,

I’ve been lurking the forums for quite a while in preparation of purchasing a 2015 M3. However, I spotted a local M5 for sale. It is a 2013 with 53,000 miles black on black. I ran a CarFax on it, and all looked good. The car does have a 3 or 4 fairly sized rubs and scratches on the front bumper, as well as one on the back. It is a 2 owner vehicle from LA and drove great. I didn’t hear any knocking from the engine.. I’m aware of the issues of a 2013 but this one looks to have been maintained adequately and on time at the BMW dealer.

Does not have Lane Departure, Blind Spot, or B&A sound.

Asking 28k.

What do you guys think?

also — will most likely be taking it to BMW and having them inspect it prior to purchasing if all goes as planned. Vehicle is bone stock, never been tracked, has almost new brakes, great tires.

I'd pass; or pay no more than $25-26k. The market on these cars is tanking like crazy, especially the far less desirable 2013's.

hmm, I see people are trending away from 2013s. I was going to try and offer 25k for it.

I agree. If you like the car, make an offer. The only red flag in the information you posted is the oil consumption - it's probably within the realm of "normal" by BMW M engines, but be prepared for 1 quart per 1,000 miles if it is a burner. These cars are hit or miss with that. You're lucky in that the guy even mentioned it ahead of time. Most of us had to find out after purchase. If you're good with topping up, then I say go get a PPI done on it and make an offer.

From what you said, it sounds like a good deal. Like others have said, definitely get that PPI done before buying it. The engine does regularly burn oil so expect that. As long as the services have been done & on time, you should be good.

Best of luck!

another thing, he did mention he had drove the car hard once on the way to the airport after it had been sitting for a week and the car produced a ton of smoke from the exhaust. He took it to BMW and had paperwork from the visit.. they told him it was just built up residue that caused that from not driving the car for a while. I’m thinking - possible oil leak?

The seller seems honest & transparent, but personally I would give this a miss.

If its this one https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/d...6513/overview/ , its hard to tell from the only 3 photos. Overall its looks good but get it checked out at a BMW dealership before you give the check. It does look stock.

They don’t, but they also do. Looks to be a 2013 issue only that almost everybody who owns one has to deal with. BMW also denies any faults and claims it’s within standards.

No, i'm with you. Yea they burn oil but its not within any standard other than the standard bmw has of not replacing every motor so they basically say "tough nuggets, live with it"
also dont listen to bmw when they tell u to use 0w-30 oil and dont listen when they say change the oil every 10k miles.

i did full-on research that only a philosopher of my caliber can do. lol

but seriously, i did read a lot and i learned that NO motor just burns oil.
if a motor burns oil, it means oil is getting past seals/gaskets that it should not.
However, this does not mean it is a fatal condition.
However, do you know what creates a fatal condition in this motor?
-A lack of lubrication

While yes, you can buy the car and certainly enjoy it,
if you have the coin and patience, wait for a '14+ and youll have much less worries and u can get the much sexier LED headlamps

oh, i missed the part about the kook scrubs on front and rear bumpers.
thats a sign that it was either driven by a woman, or a man that cant drive.

either way, judging from that and the oil burning, i'd bet they werent habitual about letting the motor warm up
(which along with improper break in within its first 1200 miles are the 2 most common reason for the s63 to burn oil later on)

id stay away bro
