Slaving Away Today
Hi Guys,
After picking up my first M car yesterday I spent all day today giving it some TLC. The engine bay needed a good once over, back breaking work. some before and after pics. |

No plans at the moment as I want to just enjoy as is I was contemplating an Exhaust Miester but realised that the flaps automatically open up after a couple of minutes on their own. |

To my knowledge the flaps only open after a certain rpm. I've wired mine open permanently using mig wire.
If I could recommend anything it would be to replace the exhaust tips and add the genuine m performance carbon diffuser. These are the only things these cars need. Maybe gloss black side vents and front grills. |

I was doing some reading, https://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=877828 and it seems the US cars only open after certain revs but the UK cars are opening after a couple of minutes after starting. I tested it first thing this morning as exactly as stated the flaps opened after a couple of minutes after startup. |

That’s certainly not my experience of the M5
My car was always quiet for a V8 since fitting an exhaustmeister it’s a lot louder and sounds like a V8 should A standard car keeps the flaps closed until a certain RPM is reached They are vacuum controlled Are you sure the flaps open and stay open on their own? I am not convinced unless it’s modified |

Yep.
it's not modified. The car was cold, started it up and only the two inner pipes were active for 2 mins and then the outer flaps opened up. This was all whilst just idling. |

Hard at it I see but it's worth it when it's all clean. My exhaustmeister remains closed all the time until I open it remotely which i prefer.

I have the BMW removal tool for the side vents, makes removing them very simple and wont scratch your car. £20 posted
YouTube videos on this are wrong and risk damage It takes 10 seconds with the tool |

I have never cleaned an engine bay and mine is pretty mucky. Is there anything to be careful of? I presume you did it by hand rather than using a pressure washer.

Yes all done with hand and no pressure washer or hose pipe.
method was: 1) use half inch paint brush to brush away all dust 2) Get a vessel (I used a paint kettle) with warm water and fairy liquid 3) use the half inch paint brush dipped in the water to work small areas 4) use microfiber cloth to wipe off liquid worked a treat and the fairy really broke up the grease. Be warned, it's back breaking. |
