Issue with front seat

I noticed that the colour was coming off the seat so took the car to BMW who said it must be a belt rubbing in the seat.

I rejected that as I don't wear a belt so they said maybe it's dirty so gave me a can of seat cleaner which didn't work

Clearly the dye is coming off and the dealer said it's wear and tear which I rejected as it's done 14,500 miles and it's not even 2.5 years old

I said if a seat has done this then it's clearly not fit for purpose, all I have done is sat on it, after all it's a seat

Going to go to BMW Customer Service but has anyone else had this?

Mine is the same but my car is older and has 47k miles. I did get some colour specific dye but I haven't tried it as yet.

I agree it is poor considering the retail price of these cars, unless these are abused (which mine are not) then the seats should not wear so quickly and if they do, as you said, they are not fit for purpose.

The response from my local BMW Dealer

Thank you for your email

With the photos and when inspected we believe that the marks are caused by something rubbing on the cover and not a manufacture defect

BMW give us the guide lines and the next stage is to contact BMW customer service direct

Kind regards
Ian

I have contacted BMW UK to make a complaint as I dont think its reasonable that a seat loses its covering after 14,500 miles and less than 3 years old.

I am really annoyed that they say its caused by rubbing, what else is going to cause it, its a seat and you sit on it. If the coating is coming off then that to me is a defect.

How can it be acceptable that a seat can lose its coating so quickly and BMW say its normal and I should expect it???

Any advice as I am not prepared to just accept that a £95K RRP car can do this after such a short space of time.

Got a response from BMW UK and to say its a joke is an understatement. How are you supposed to use the car without sitting on it? I also dont wear a belt on my trousers so they really don't have a clue.

I have advised I am escalating it but the service from BMW UK is slow and not helpful at all.

Good afternoon

Thanks for your recent contact about the leather on your vehicle. I’m sorry to hear about this – I can understand why you would be disappointed.

I’ve contacted Jody Boyle, service manager at BMW Cotswold Cheltenham who’s advised me they’ve looked at the leather and feel that the marking is due to external influence (i.e. belt or clothing is rubbing on the

light leather and marking it). Jody said they’ve supplied the genuine BMW Leather cleaner to see if this helped, which you’ve since used to no effect.

I’m afraid as the Centre have said this has been caused by an external influence, I’m not in a position to change this outcome.

I’m sorry I was unable to help you any further on this occasion. But, if there’s anything I can do in the future, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

Very poor response as you are paying through the nose for that official full warranty and a replacement back rest piece would not be such a big deal for them.

It's still under the original Manufactures Warranty until October

I won't let it go as it's a fault and they need to do the right thing

What you could try is getting a written opinion from a leather seat supplier/specialist on the condition of your seat on the not yet 3 year old car
with such a low mileage. It may add more weight to your point.

Hang about Jon you didn't actually drive the car did you? that voids your warranty I'm afraid...

On my m5 I used to clean the leather every week and on the seat bolster it was pretty worn. so maybe try some good quality leather cleaner with a microfiber cloth. The M3 isn't as bad as I'm guessing its a harder leather used

I used BMWs own cleaner mate and it made no difference

I think the M3 is the same merino leather as the M5 just about 3 more cows worth

The side bolsters are perfect so clearly it's a fault if they are good and the back rest is worn

You keeping well Sam?

Just been doing other things, as much as it's an awesome car I doesn't make me want to go out for a drive

It's maybe to quick and too big to enjoy if that makes sense
