Transmission and Rear Diff oil
Guys,
It's time for me to get the transmission and rear differential oil changed. Out of the following three, which one would you recommend for transmission oil (for a 6 speed) and rear differential fluid. Also, how many quartz needed for each change? Liqui moly Red line Castrol Thanks! |

In case anyone is doing the differential and the manual oil change, I ended up going with what Castrol SAF-XJ 75w-140 for the differential and Pentosin MTF2 75w-80 for the manual transmission. Both are what the BMW is using and recommends. |

Just want to bump this to the top, was considering changing the fluid in my M6's manual trans and just curious what other experience people had. Hard to find information on this topic.

The rear diff looks easy, and of the four top choices out there, you can't really go wrong.

I run Valvoline 75w-140 limited slip fluid in the diff. The only difference with the F10 versus older diff's is the change interval... much shorter on the F10. They want to keep the solenoids clean. That's the same reason it's important to change the brake fluid regularly. So many systems are controlled using the brake hydraulics. |

I've only got 29k on my car so the trans fluid is not extremely urgent, was really just creating a discussion. Have you researched the CDV? Holy hell talk about something that will ruin your day, especially on a tuned car...

Diff fluid should be changed every 20-30k miles per BMW. The actual "spec" calls for every 3rd oil change, but keep in mind that the oil change interval is based on their timing... like 13k miles or something dumb. So although we may change our engine oil more frequently, there's no reason to change the diff fluid on the same shortened scale.
The 6MT I'd recommend every 50k miles. Last edited by technician117; 05-05-2019 at 06:49 AM.. Reason: updated info to more specific |

What truly is maddening is that in conjunction with the relatively aggressive timing of my DME tune, you had the perfect storm of when the CDV is NOT a good thing. By letting off the clutch and then quickly engaging the throttle, I built boost very quickly - quicker than the time the clutch had to engage the flywheel because of the delay. The result then is essentially forced clutch slippage in a high torque situation, and I got it a lot because of this damned CDV. Since throttle position in the DME tuned is closely mapped to the increased timing, and of course I'm running additional boost - this is much worse than stock because when stomping the throttle after a shift there is a lot more torque being applied to the clutch. Now, since the clutch engagement is being delayed via this valve and I'm already on the throttle before the clutch is actually engaged (again, what the CDV is supposed to do) I'm not only beating the piss out of the clutch but I'm also unable to consistently row through gears quickly without the car freaking out. I thought it was the clutch itself (which may still be an issue) but this CDV definitely played a big part. Looking forward to the results of this delete with a bunch of other tweaks I'm having done.

i'm no mechanic but i've had a lot of professionals tell me that when it comes to transmissions- if it aint broke dont touch it..
reason being, if a tranny is doing fine, its in a happy state .. but if you drain and flush a tranny thats happy, it may become angry. leaks may arise and buildup knocked loose and so on. ive heard the same about changing oil. just drain and refill, dont flush. |
