Jon Stewart Congressional Hearing regarding 9/11 First Responders

Anyone else see the video of Jon Stewart slamming congress yesterday?

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/vi...esponders.html

I applaud you, Jon Stewart!

Saw bits and pieces of it on the news this morning. This needed to have been addressed long before now. Agreed. Tip of the hat in the direction of Jon Stewart.

Well - congress did have the time to give themselves a pay raise this week, so I guess we do know where their priorities are - but this should come as no surprise.

Good for Jon Stewart making an effort, but man, he is looking rough.

I really know nothing about him. I've been googling around after seeing his speech. He's been on this since 2010.

Congressional hearings are sideshows, which seem to be more about media coverage than actual information gathering by the committee. A form of political entertainment.

Stewart used that to his advantage and advocated well for his cause (which I support), and got the media coverage he sought. But clearly congresspeople couldn’t be bothered to attend, and were ill-prepared for reporters questions on the issue.

I don’t know anyone who likes being called on the carpet as Jon did, and elected officials seem to like it even less. So for effectiveness in getting congressional movement on this issue, I think it was likely a poor tactic.

We’ll see...

It's getting a lot of press. Maybe, hopefully, people will see all the empty chairs of those that had better things to do than show up. It's a disgrace.

It was easily passed today in committee and moves on to the House now. For the record there wasnít any doubt what so ever that it wouldnít pass. Just because there were empty seats there doesnít mean they didnít care or were nay votes. They were all aye votes. Stewart was either grandstanding or doesnít understand how things work. Iíll go with grandstanding, he is a performer after all. His theatrics didnít matter at all or make it pass.

I live right outside the city and worked in the city at the time the planes hit. If it wasn't for me getting injured and just out of the hospital I would have been on the pile doing what needed to be done. I lost two close people in the Trade Center that day and know many who were there in the months following. Firemen, construction and Cops. More then a few of the guys I know have issues related to Ground Zero and they all have been getting care and assistance. Not saying everyone is pleased but many have been and are still getting services they need. There’s always room for improvement and the same holds true for most good health ins policies.

My other half is a NYPD detective and worked out at the landfill in Staten Island for about a year where they were sorting the debris looking for remains to ID. So many of his friends and colleagues have gotten sick with different kinds of cancers and have died. It's so sad. Some of them were already retired when they got sick and never signed up for the benefits.

i enjoyed him when he was on daily show and saw several live recordings. i could not watch the show since the new host took over however from reading and seeing what jon stewart does with his time now that he is off the air it really shows that his feet are as big as his mouth and he puts in the work his mouth does. it isn't just for show or ratings it is because he believes in the cause. "celebrities" like dicaprio or the like who complain about global warming but then travel by private jet, yacht, own outlandish homes with multiple cars and have carbon footprints several hundred times larger than the average are just a bunch of hypocrites. same with the "celebrities" who talk about the wealthy but do not give their wealth or are the ones doing charity work and "helping" when cameras are present and then go off into their elitist bubbles afterward.

That sucks. Just one cop I know who was at Ground Zero is my cousin and he was NYPD ESU at the time. He spent a lot of time there and developed a bad respiratory disease breathing in all that shit, I forget what itís called. He has diminished lung capacity now and canít do the physical activities he once enjoyed. He has since retired and getting help with his med conditions still to this day.

Those guys youíre talking about should be able to get the bennys retroactive through the NYPD and 9/11 fund.

I am sure Jon is a good person but it's complicated and there are really no good guys or bad guys ... it's just a bunch of guys. Jon would probably have a different approach if he's sitting in the seat of Congress. The bad guys here are what caused 911, not the members of Congress.

I'd like Jon with his popularity to take on more difficult subjects like immigration, tariff, or abortion. He probably won't come out as a good guy the other side regardless whether he's for or against any of those issues. I don't think he'll have anyone disagreeing with him with respects to healthcare for 911 first responders.
