Need Oil advice.....
Hey guys I have gone through all of the threads about oil recommendations and my head is spinning lol. I am coming up on an oil change and brake fluid flush. Im going to try and time the oil change right before the car goes into storage for the winter, this way the car sits with fresh oil over the winter months. I usually change the oil, detail the car and put her into storage the same day. This is how I normally do it, but this is the first oil change outside of warranty. The top recommendations I have read are:
- Mobil 1 - Liqui Moly - Motul - Redline - BMW Oil I cant decide which to go with and I also can not decide which weight to choose. My car just turned 8k miles and is only driven from spring to fall in NJ, never tracked etc. When I tell you she is babied its an understatement. Also I have Zero oil consumption. 0W30, 0W40, 5W30 or 5W40?? Thanks guys, I am not looking to beat a dead horse, just looking for a few opinions on what you guys are using and like. |

Based on your description I would go with one of the zero weight oils. If it were mine, I'd use the 40 weight because you don't drive it in the cold weather. So 0W-40. For brand, that mostly comes down to loyalty/preference versus cost. All of the ones you listed are good quality.

Why make it so complicated? Just go with oe recommended weight. I prefer Liquid Moly. It treated my old M5 well. No oil consumption comparing to Castro or Mobil 1.

0W40 is a recommended weight from BMW. BMW recently changed their approval from an LL01 oil and I'm looking for the best oil for my car. If it's BMW oil then so be it, but it turns out Castrol Edge is a very robust oil, several approval certifications and going to the 40 weight is a good thing for my engine since I mostly only drive the car in the summer.

Total Base Number : TBN
G’day
All of the oil you mention are all within specs recommended by BMW . TBN is what i use to decide for my preference re : my Bmw M5 F10 LCI and have nil Oil consumption between changes. The higher the TBN on the tecnical specs the better protection for your engine and the last time I looked Mobil 1 0-40W had the highest TBN . It is an approved Oil by Porsche / Mercedes AMG / BMW . I have used the Mobil 1 product for 8 years and my Bmw Engines have zero issues with oil burn and are running superb . The other critical issue is that oil and filter are changed regularly and not on condition per Bmw. I change oil and filter every year regardless of mileage . Cheers Bruce |
