Though no more cosmetically revealing, these photos show two F10 M5's in testing of both a V8 and V10 engine!
This is revealed to us by Scott26/7. However, which engine it will receive is not yet known. What a beast of a car this will be, regardless of which engine is chosen. ![]() And some info from mapezzul on the V10 vs. V8 decision process: Quote:

Can't see why they would bother with a V8?
Current M5 is a V10, and current M3 is a V8 ![]()

V8? how did they find out the engine? did they open up the hood and looked inside? I thought those test drivers are pretty sensitive about you poking around with their car.
anyway, what's with the tail light? Ferrari? |

550 is not a TT
V10 does sound nearly as good as v8. TTV8 will brings TONS of torque and power, more than enough... and emissions will be manageable |

No offense to e92 M3 owners, but if the new M5 is as unspectacular as the current M3 is...I for one will be extremely disappointed. The new M5 will most likely be heavier than the e60, and if they don't give it a significant HP bump it's going to be plagued by the same lackluster performance compared to the non-M TT cars that BMW is offering.
Getting the torque required to move a heavy sedan while still undercutting the EPA regulations is going to get harder and harder with naturally aspirated engines. These cars are going to continue to be packed full of more and more technology and weight. I am a huge fan of the V10 E60 M5, but things have to change...and if going boosted is the answer to a faster car with better gas mileage and less weight, then so be it. I will be surprised if the new M5 is going to be an N/A V10. In order to make it faster than the E60 it is going to need quite a bit more power, which means larger displacement and more gas needed for a reliable road car. I can see a V10TT, or even a V8TT. Only time will tell!

![]() As for the engine, I'm sure they are leaning towards the TT V8 route as the X cars are using and have been getting high praise for that engine. But I think BMW M is very selective of engine and drivetrain combinations so they would be willing to give up efficiency for a better overal performance of the car and these real world tests and data will ultimatly choose which engine combination they go with. |

very true! But software flash the TT V8 outa the X5/6M and that 555 would become a whole different creature... 700 maybe?

o l @ most of these posts, especially the one that says something about the current e9x M3 being "unspectacular." sounds like someone is angry he could only afford a 135i... The next M5 will be awesome, the e60 M5 will always be awesome as well. Though I almost purchased an e90 M3, I decided to hold out, but I can assure you "unspectacular" is not an adjective that most people whom have actually driven an e9x M3 would use to describe it. /thread

Call me clueless but why 'bin' the V10 for the M5 and put it into the next gen 5er? OK, all the development costs on tbe V10 are now 'sunk', but to move the V10 into the mainstream would defeat BMW AG's new strategic 'green' direction - no? ![]()

S65 V8 unspectacular? Hmmm...

Meanwhile, current buyers will enjoy their Landhut F1-derived with 8 individual butterfly hi-rev V8s. If not this engine, then a Ferrari V8. I like "Evo", said it better than me: Quote:
Meanwhile, I will love the NA V8.
