Next month My m5 engine is coming out and being forged. Car still runs as normal but there has been some detonation on the pistons i found a few months ago. Not sure what caused it i did have a meth issue and i did get some pre ignition with stock plugs earlier in the year either of those maybe responsible. Not going quite as crazy as the others here just rods, pistons with stock compression and some pure stage 2 hybrids.

Car currently has flash, ssp spec r, jb4, bms meth kit, eventuri intakes, and no catalytic converters.

I would be interested to see how much this simple job costs.

Forged rods and pistons parts alone could be between $7-$10k. Then there's labor. Just to give you an idea.

How long does it take to forge an engine?

Wow. The stock s63tu is letting me down.. too many people rebuilding. 4 out of the 5 people i know who are having engine replacement/rebuilding issues are running JB4. Im not insinuating, just throwing that out there.

One important fact is "Who is doing your tune", in many cases engines are getting damaged because of there is something is not right with the tune they are running.

Engine Rebuild Labors are varies from shop to shop sole may charge 2k-5k others 10k+.

I am in England so using a bmw engine specialist over here. I think the damage to my pistons is due to some pre ignition i was getting when doing some high speed pulls due to not fitting colder plugs and not regapping initially after installing my jb4 and meth, i changed the plugs in january but never put a bore scope down till february after i had a meth flow issue due to a faulty solenoid. Since then ive set some fast 100-200 times and been to the drag strip with no issues at all so unless it ran lean again and cylinder temp went up i think it would be ok as the detonation is only light. The only parts in the engine i plan to change from oem are the rods and the pistons, i will be using oem gaskets, shells, valves and cams i will also be using stock compression 10:1 and i will not be going for larger turbos just pure stage 2. In my mind the engine forged with ps2 should still be pretty reliable.

I dont think the jb4 is a bad tune for our cars and on mine i see the afrs are slightly rich if anything, that said theres alot of user adjustability and caution is needed when setting boost additive and a few other settings.

Also most of us who want to exceed 22psi have done so with jb4 so i guess most the more aggressively tuned cars are using jb4 and thats why they are failing. My car still runs as it should and I blame myself for not swapping plugs when i installed but i didnt understand plug temps and just thought id get a misfire and change.

Im also fitting the csf charge coolers, they have been powder coated similar to sakhir orange and i also have a supersprint exhaust manifold going on.

I currently have decat pipes but i am tempted to refit my cats but hollowed out and wrapped to try and keep the heat in and stop that annoying wastegate rattle being so loud as it really bugs me.

With stock turbos and stock engine my current 100-200 is 4.9 and my 60-130 5.8 so im looking forward to seeing how much lower i can get that number. I guess as im using stock compression the engine should run basically the same and those pulls were done with cold iats so the main power gains will be from the pure stage 2s and the manifold.

Just when I was thinking of getting JB 4 tune without meth. I think I’ll go either BPM, or BM3

I have done this on a few cars and although seems to work well, given the power you have it might be worth doing some flow calculations? Gutting your cats will slow the gas flow as it goes from 2.75" to 5" diameter then back to 2.75" ( I am just guess pipe sizes I have not measured the downpipes) and possible cause back pressure wave (just like a 2 stroke expansion chamber) robbing you of flow and power.

Oh and I will have your downpipes when you sell them Mine is 2015 so don't think it will have wastegate rattle being electronic control

Did they change wastegate control in 2015?

Seems a lot of bmw engines have issues n63, s63 s85 and the s65 and various others

Supersprint exhaust manifold to take advantage of the hybrids. Performance gains data is hard to find currently but will hopefully get some dyno numbers before and after from the stock turbos.

Inlet Manifold not Exhaust Manifold

G’day V8Munro
I’ve looked at these Supersprint Inlet Manifolds and they are (very) impressive compared to the standard Bmw Installed Manifolds.
They flow much (much) better and have less restrictions then the original equipment.
Just so that everyone does not get confused they are indeed inlet manifolds 😎

Cheers
Bruce

100% exhaust manifolds buddy, the two big outlets bolt onto the exhaust side of the turbo and on our engines the intake manifolds are on the outside of the block, fed by the charge coolers.

What I recommend if you are running high boost either JB4 or a tune you should add octane booster on each fillup for safety and power....I use the Lucas octane booster on each fillup of 93 octane.( ~95octane)....even with past meth flow issues and improperly gapped plugs....no engine issues.....highly recommended to prevent detonation....also use top shelf oil like Total

The SS exhaust manifold looks good...would be nice to see a dyno on this

Thanks steve, when i think damage was done i was on 93+meth and probably taking the piss with boost additive as well. I currently use bmw oil but once engine built will most likely go to motul v300

Here in the U.K. our premium pump fuel is 95 octane and super unleaded pump fuel 97/98 octane so not so much of an issue here.

Fuel prices though .... !!!!!!

A lot of these S63TU's are getting older and have higher mileage, so more stories of blown motors. Also, bmw really cracked down on warranty claims.

The Americans rate their fuel differently from us in the uk/ europe.
Their 91 is our standard 95
Their 93 is our premium 98-99

Gets confusing when using boost additives or race fuel, and then theres the whole ethanol thing to confuse it more.
