Oil consumption...
So noticed my M5 uses around 1 litre per 1600 miles! (ish) is this normal or excessive?
I'm using this oil right now: I have a service coming up in the next few weeks, should i stick with the same oil or go for something else? What works well with a tuned M5? |

Normal consumption for an M engine.
That said, there are reasons for increased consumption that can be fixed or mitigated. PCV system parts if bad can send more oil into the intakes to get burned. External oil leaks from the engine will make it seem like you're "using" more oil. The oil brand and weight can affect consumption as well. When I bought my F10 it was using about the same amount of oil as you. I have no idea what oil was in the car. I changed the oil to Mobil 1 0w-40 and have continued to use that oil for the next 3 oil changes. After changing it a second time, my consumption had decreased to roughly 1 quart every 4,000 miles! It's been steady since then. Basically I have to add 1 quart between my 5k mile oil change interval. You are going to get a lot of responses on what everyone's favorite oil is. There are plenty of good brands out there. I'm just related my experiences. Good luck! |

My 2013 M5 drank about a quart every 750 miles. Techs at 2 different dealers said anything above 600 miles per quart was with in spec? I used to carry a quart in my trunk so when the light went on I could add the needed quart. Some people have no issue, some do.

Dealer saying a quart every 600 miles is crazy imo, i thought 1600 miles was bad! |

Never seen that version of Mobil One 0w-40. Might be a US versus UK thing. One I use says something like "formulated for European vehicles" or something similar. Never heard of Millers. Motul and Liqumoly are both good brands. Just make sure the general specification is correct. LL01 or in the UK it might be LL04. Some people like to look more deeply and see what some of the other specifications are and how they rate with turbo engine use.

Typical consumption for M engine is a liter per 1000 miles. Anything more is winning.
The consumption is based on how hard you drive the car. I miss the dip stick days. |
