You can tell a lot from the wear on the main bearings, connecting rod bearings, wrist pins, and other factors to determine how your oil is holding up. It would be nice if the people that had issues with their engines would post up photos of the bearings.

A good to the point post,I have only seen just a couple of grainy photos of the ruined internals concerned.

I've decided to officially put this up for sale. I'll start a separate thread, but wanted to have some conclusion to this. For anybody that's interested I've included a link to pics below. Some of the photos are not the greatest due to having the car in my garage and unable to move it. DM me if interested

2014 M5 CP, every option except carbon brakes.

To close this out... I officially sold the car... Breaks my heart, but I'm either down $20k, or fix the motor and be into it almost $60k with the loan.

Already starting to save for the F90... I will have an M5 back in the garage...

It will be mine... Oh yes... It will be mine

What did you sell it for if you don't mind?

Smart choice selling the car. I don't think buying another is a smart choice though.

If he wants to get another one then why not, we all take a money hit sometimes in our lives but that doesn't mean we should give up on what we want.

I'm just not convinced the administration under the recently replaced BMW CEO did anything to improve the reliability of the engine platform which extended to the F90 M5. He fell behind in vision and focused too much on profits. That mentality trickles down into the most undesirable places.

Maybe a future M5 platform sure, but not the F90. I'd skip it.

It's still basically the same engine design on the F90 so I believe but I would have thought the one year wait between the f10 and f90 would have resolved some of the questions concerning reliability. If there have been engine failures on the F90 then you know more than me.
One thing I noticed when taking a test drive was that the intercoolers appeared to be smaller on the f90.

Ended up getting $19k. Might have gotten more if I waited longer, but wanted it outta the garage.

Smart choice... Maybe not. But I need AWD where I live, and spend a ton of the time on the highway. Love my creature comforts, but also love the 600hp. This time around... I will have a warranty though. As I would agree, I doubt the reliability has changed much between the F10 and F90.

To be honest, I am wondering if its somewhat foolish to think a car with this much HP, can be reliable up and over 100k miles. I know there are some people that have done it, but imagine that is a lot of stress, compared to a 200-300 HP engine that goes into a Honda/Toyota... something that is known for reliability.

Where are you getting that from? I don't see a whole lot of such posts on the F90 M5 forum?

I have never yet seen to heard of an F90 engine 'lunched'. I've seen one written off in a petrol station somersault in Florida.

Personally, if I wanted 600hp and AWD it wouldn't be a BMW again. It would be another AMG.

Follow up to this:

The guy I sold the car to, was able to crack open the engine and put a scope inside. Turns out the engine spun 2 bearings and bent a rod. On top of that... Looks like some of the pistons have numbers on them. As in... This engine was likely rebuilt already, as I don't know BMW to number the pistons...

I am convinced this was hot rodded before I got it, the engine was blown and rebuilt poorly. I doubt there is much I can do about it now... but let this be a lesson to double check the details and always get a warranty...

Some bullshit right here

Why are you convinced it was rebuilt poorly? My cynicism says it's just a poorly designed engine.

Don't rule out that BMW did this repair either because that engine would have been well within warranty the first time it happened.

I've said it before... stay away from these cars if you can. I've heard stories by a reputable shop.
