Oil consumption
I know these motors use oil. I've now added 4quarts in 8000miles (including the factory oil change.
About 1 per 15-1800 miles. Seems high... At this rate ill never actually need an oil change. What are you guys a seeing? Does it get better with mileage? |

Did my break-in service at 1160 miles and it had used a little oil up to that point. I am at 4200 miles now and recently added half a quart which brought me up to just below full. It didn't prompt me that it needed oil until I did the check oil procedure and then it said I needed a quart. I feel so blind with this damn electronic dipstick that I only added half a quart and that seems to have done it. I can live with half a quart every 3000 miles. I just miss a real dipstick - not just for checking the level but to actually see what the oil looks like.

This hasn't been a thread topic in a very long time... Not terrible to get updates and notify new owners.
So, what's your hi-PO break in method?? |

I had good oil consumption up to 5-6k miles, after my long eurotrip 3k miles in summer all of a sudden i need to add quart every 1200-1500miles! Cant really complaint, as i have service pack and dont pay for oil, but still... It did noticeably changed

I switched to 0W-30 German Castrol. I keep a quart in my trunk all the time. I usually add oil every 4,000mi (in my 3 previous E60 M5's I only added a quart every 10,000mi).
Oil consumption in the F10 M5 seems to vary for most people. I broke my car in by spec. Many people on the forums bring their M5 to the dealer for oil top offs, and I do not get that - especially for people that live far away from a dealership.

Not sure how you would replicate this in the US, but avoiding highways is a good start. I literally set my Nav to avoid highways. The rhythm of constantly accelerating and braking as you go from apex to apex on country roads is very good for break in.

8000 miles, not a drop used.
I've followed the BMW break-in instructions.

FYI. Just because you add oil frequently does not mean you won't need an oil change. The crap just concentrates.
