Shutdown newtis

Fellow enthusiasts!

BMW Corporate requested the full shutdown of a helpful DIY source, newtis.info!
I totally understand that dealerships need to make money, most customers use professional support anyway. Nonetheless, there are technically inclined enthusiasts, just having fun working on their cars and performing maintenance on their own.
I have used newtis countless times and I'm upset now, but supposedly there are alternatives.
I learned that Rheingold/ISTA offers manuals as well, plus it will allow you to perform certain maintenance tasks, like opening the emergency brake motor mechanism on the rear brake, etc.
There's tons of information about ISTA out there, but I'm a newbie and intend to make this our learning platform. If you use ISTA successfully or have helpful links to software downloads, manuals and DIYs, please share with us!

Let's show BMW that this shutdown won't affect our passion!!!

I use ista and it does have manuals, in fact I believe the ones on newtis are from ista, I will look into where I got mine from but it is a process to setup and use. first it uses the entire storage space on my laptop, I believe its 480 gigs. Second configuring it was a pain, and third to download it it goes through mega, which if you have an account you download pretty easily but if you don't it only let's you download ~10gigs every 5 hours....

I know there are links and tutorials for downloading ISTA and all but I'm not a computer wiz when comes to zipping and unzipping files and what not. Does anyone know where I can get it preloaded and ready to go?

You could go on eBay and find sellers that will install it for a fee. I've done it before and it went very well. The seller I used was 777ae.

Great idea, I will search this eBay seller and ask about system requirements. I read more about the storage needs, might have to get a new laptop to perform this installation. Thanks for the input!

They sell laptops too loaded with the software. Wasn't too expensive. I think $200-400 range.

I had storage issues and can't upgrade my MacBook so i just bought a 512gb flash drive and he loaded it on the drive. When I need to run the software I just plug it in. I got the smallest flash drive I could find. My Mac is an i9 with 32GB, using boot camp, ISTA runs flawlessly.

Thanks for the link, great bundle pricing!
In order to program the F series, I need an ICOM, correct? If I just want to look up repair manuals and look for parts, ISTA D (ISTA+/Rheingold) should work just fine.

Do I need programming for the following DIYs?

Replacement injectors
Replacement induction coils

Yes, you can still use ISTA+ for reference material.

If I'm not mistaken you can do everything with an enet cable on the F series.

Best place for research

I decided to purchase a HP laptop with 512 GB SSD, 16 GB DDR4 and Ryzen 5 processor, just for programming. Then I will get the ISTA package from your link and I'm good to go. It was time for a programming laptop anyway

I have the older ISTA-D on my laptop. I don't remember the details of the install but it wasn't that bad. I got the download as a torrent from a friend. It's only the diagnostic and troubleshooting software, no "programming" which is misleading, I'll get to that in a second. The ISTA-D was a big file but not terrible. Most of the additional space comes with ISTA-P (programming). I'm under the assumption that ISTA+ combined D and P.

re: programming - ISTA-D still performs functions such as battery registry, injector programming, etc.

edit to add 2 things:

1) My ISTA-D only covers up to 2013MY. Be sure the version you download is new enough
2)INPA is another option. I have a newer version working (in German) on my laptop, but I don't seem to have Daten files for the F10 M5. If anyone has them, pleas PM me!

So I went with the eBay seller suggested in the link, outstanding experience. ISTA+ is now fully running on my new laptop, next purchase will be an ICOM NEXT to perform programming properly. I'm pretty hyped, the shop manuals are awesome and much better displayed than in newtis. I do not miss newtis anymore, I'm happy I went this route now!

Just to read codes and perform diagnostics, do you need an ICOM cable, or could I use the same cable I used on my E60 M5?

I'm not sure if its the same exact cable but you don't need the icom. the cable I bought was 20 bucks or so. Here is a link to the exact cable I bought. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V3C47YD...UTF8&psc=1

I second this, just get an ENET cable with OBD2 connector, it's fine dir diagnosis only. Programming should be fine via ICOM, tho be on the safe side.

Correct, I bought it and know that ICOM is only for programming, so it should not be messed with unless somebody truly knows what they're doing.
