Tyre Choice

Recommendation on a set of rear tyres...

295/30/20 Tyres needed

1. MPS4S
2. Falkens FK510
3. GY F1 super sport
4. Vredestein Ultrac Vorti

I know the Michelin's are amazing, but I have also read some fantastic reviews on the Falkens.

Thoughts?

Never heard of Falkens on M5's, different tyres on other cars may perform good on tyre tests. On M5 its got to be the PS4's though, consider fitting 305's on the back like me and you should out accelerate even tuned M5's with thinner 295's as what the laws of gravity and grip allow will hold them back with less traction.

Don't bother with anything except Michelin PS4S.

305's seem very tempting now

I have found all my (new) ps4 tyres on-line at huge discount and a friendly fitter not that far fits them, it's around £15-20 each inc with everything.I get them to undo/do all nuts up by hand.

I would rather have bald tyres than Falkens. With 600bhp you need Michelin Pilot Sport 4s and nothing else.

If putting wider tyres on it may cause an issue with your insurance as the car would potentially be not standard.

That might be down to the better tyre than the extra 10mm of width.

Take this for what it's worth. I got my car off a lease whereas the original owner out a brand new set of Falken FK510 on all 4 corners. Although they look good, I slid around everywhere. I ended up getting the Michelin's and in return got a brand new car. The handling, grip and overall performance was 10 times better. Trust me do yourself a favor and slap a set of Michelin's on and don't forget the 305's on the rear and enjoy your new car. Thank us later.

You did the right thing putting 305's on as we spend most of our time in normal traffic and that take off grip from the lights is just priceless.

I'd say so but the extra 10mm should make some difference also.

One last thing haha, I fitted 5mm spacers with extended bolts just on the rear and the back end looks a million dollars with enhanced stability on take off with the wider track.(you can still use the original spec locking nut as it is more than 5 turns to secure).

I'm considering the exact setup with 305's and 5mm spacers on the rear only. I was concerned about the appearance compared to the front end. Do you have any profile pics you can post?

I am also curious about your opinion on the amount of understeer you're experiencing.

You'd have to go at track speeds to find the absolute limits on these. On our roads I've always had neutral feedback on bends with them and definitely no understeer with the new PS4's fronts I've recently had fitted and in my opinion the front track is wide enough without matching spacers.
I've taken a few curves at speed and found no noticeable understeer under power just the back playing in song with your steering input when M dynamic mode is switched on, a good feeling without risk of overdoing it..
and I would have thought that u/steer afflicts FWD cars more. It goes without saying never to switch off DSC.
For a pic you'll have to go back a bit in this section where I've taken one already.

So do you the following set up on MPS4s:

Rear - 305/30/20
Fronts - 265/30/20

I believe you want to stick with 265/35/20 on the front to keep the diameter as close as possible.

On a related note: has anyone noticed that the listed tread width on Tire Rack for the Porsche N0 spec 305/30/20 is listed at 11.6" vs 11.2" for the standard version?

Edit: are Tire Rack's tread widths even reliable? I see a 265/40/20 Mercedes spec thst shows 11.4, which is impossible, right?

I have been reading in a few random places, would 275/35/20 work up front?

so, 305/30/20 rear and 275/35/20 up front?

I have just order 275/35/20 for the front - vredesteins ultrac vorti r... A great tyre i have used on my boxster s in the past and my local tuner has had good experiences with them on his M5.

Once the backs wear out i will put vortis 305/30/20s on the rear also.

I believe so, though my understanding is increasing the width of the tire but not the wheel lets the sidewall flex more, which means reduced steering response (and, I'm assuming, steering feel). How much it's reduced, and whether the advantages in other areas are worth it, I can not say.
