Nope turned off no use for me! Don't care for the restart it has to cause wear and tear on the starter I would guess.

After changing the exhaust, its always off. Every time it started with the after market system, it was too obnoxious.

I suppose if I drove a lot of stop and go miles in the city everyday, and gas were $10 a gallon, I probably would. But since neither is true, I don't use it. I have tried it though, and it is really seamless in operation. I would be interested to hear from someone who has kept a log of weekly gas usage and in similar driving conditions, has driven both with auto start and without, to learn if there is a significant mileage difference?

This is about as useful on a ///M car as the Efficient Dynamics sticker in the rear window

Mine disables automatically when in manual mode, which is what I'm usually in anyway.

Always off. It's too annoying on the M5. I drove the new F30 328i and that wasn't bad with the auto start.

Always off...this shouldn't even be an option on this car IMO. The Efficient Dynamics sticker on the rear window is also a joke.

Hi Everyone

I think you all should give it another go!

I thought I hate this, it's a point less gimmick etc, when I got my car....but then my sales guy pointed out...You would never be in a closed car park with all the parked cars idling - imagine the fumes! Well that's whats happening in every traffic jam, in Europe all new cars have it, one by one as cars get it it will help a lot.

So I started using it...well now I get pissed off when it doesn't shut down on me, and in other cars which don't do it...and I was was a full skeptic...I like the peace and quiet...

Followed by planting it and burning plenty of gas ;-)

Cheers

Oh yes, BTW I am sure BMW have worked out how to make a starter motor that doesn't wear out...with start stop in mind...

(now wait for my car to fail!!)

Cheers

I just had mine reprogrammed to default to off on startup.

All new Euro cars are getting this feature. The M5's problem is that the Stop/Start isn't a good example of the technology. My E63 also has S/S and it is fast, smooth and unobtrusive. The M5's restart is slow and comes with an unnecessary rev flare. My dealer turned it off for me at no charge. I can enable it at will but can't see myself doing this.

I turn it on long enough to show someone what it does and why I keep it off.

Never use it. It's rather annoying and I don't believe the fuel savings is worth the wear and tear on the starter and engine.

I don't think you need to have it programmed. Mine stays off, and I didn't need to code this.

Is it Non-US cars that have it programmed on?

Non-US cars may be programmed to come back on the next time the car is used, but mine definitely stays off.

I usually keep mine on. I live in LA so I often hit stop lights that last up to 2-3 minutes. I sit at least 1 hour per tank at lights so Imagine leaving your car running for an hour, it's going to burn unnecessary fuel period. I'm sure BMW tested this technology for years before implementing to come up with a system that wouldn't cause wear. . .

I really like that the car is greener during those times as opposed to idling and adding CO2 and burning unnecessary gasoline. Stoplights can last an eternity; and if I get caught at a train crossing - then I could read a novel. Also I find it quite peaceful.

Tiff at Fifth Gear did a segment on this recently and they found that in a British town (not sure if it was London or another) that the same car with stop-start enabled vs disengaged saved ~15% in fuel. That's a real savings for being green.
Season 21 episode 8, segment 3 - if you search online you can find it.

I'm pretty sure these systems will be mandated by most governments in the next few years.

You don't need to program it on or off, it's your choice.
