How long do coils last?
Hey guys,
I've got my original coils on the car with 65K miles on it. Not tuned. now I’m thinking of changing the coil pack before they start to give me trouble. Am I on right track or just wasting money? Plugs are already done. How long do the ignition coils last on our m5? Thanks |

Typical life span varies by the coil manufacturer. Bosch, Bremi, Delphi and Eldor have all been OEMs at some point in time. Eldor is the current.
What I seen working at a BMW specialist is 65-85k is the range we start seeing failures. It is very infrequent a lower mileage coil bites the dust but it does happen. BMW's with over 80k we recommend changing all of the coils at once to avoid repeat visits for the same complaint, I've seriously had a stubborn 128i owner come back 3 times in 2 weeks for subsequent coil failures on adjacent cylinders. They are without a doubt maintenance items, but I would not recommend replacing them unless you've had an issue that has been pinpointed as a bad coil. If and when that happens replace them all. |
