When I bought my car I had a cylinder 8 misfire. Malfunction message that goes away after restart. Injector replaced and all fine and dandy.
Month later I have a cylinder 5 misfire. Suspect it's an injector again. This all happens under WOT close to redline. This last one only happens in 3rd gear around redline. Time for a 535 loaner |

My dt malfunctions came after i started to mod the car. Basically my clutches started to slip as soon as i went over 600whp.
The M5 seems to throw a DT malfunction whenever it has any problem not just clutches... but If you drive in comfort automatic mode with lowest clutch pressure the trans will slip the clutches to give you a smooth take off decreasing the life of your stock clutches. so most people that experience dt malfunctions after modding its most likely your trans letting you know hey im slipping. my problems went away after ssp spec-r kit but came back as soon as i hit 800+whp. No more dt malfunctions after ssp spec-x kit + ssp transcooler kit (daily driver) |

Just had my first DT Malfunction, I just did a Flash tune wondering if its that. I had less then 1/8 of a tank left, hot day today round 95 and went WOT at the upshift into 4th is when i got it. Went back into auto mode no issues went away.
Thoughts should i flash back to stock and take it to the dealer for them to look at or wait and see if it happens again? |

if it isnt a sparkplug gap issue.....most drivetrain malfunctions are caused by this known Getrag transmission issue;

Stock M6 here
And having the same issue When the engine is warm, full throttle and got error message. Car misfires and lots of fumes out of the exhaust and smells of fuel. Anyone know what faulty parts could be causing this? Apart from injectors, coilpacks, spark plugs and hpfp. |

If fumes are white could be a fuel pump....my lpfp died recently with lots of white smoke at idle.

Happened to me under hard acceleration. I have a tune, a GruppeM intake and a muffler delete. 5th gear WOT then bang the dreaded Drivetrain Malfunction warning!

Maximum Drivetrain output error
I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. Drove a couple M3s in the morning and while searching for a used M5, went on my very first test drive '15 with 52k miles. Let the engine warm up (whats a normal engine temp?) and drove normal on the street and fwy. Phx, 12pm, 105 degrees out. while coming back, got on it WOT on the on ramp and coming through 4th or 5th I got the following message https://ibb.co/kUFotz car governed itself, felt a little rough and was slowing down as i was pushing on the accelerator. Pulled over, turned the car off, turned it back on, malfunction still remained but then went away when I did a u-turn. is this the same error most are getting?
So is this something that I should be worried about? Seems like a very common thing with these cars. if this is the one I end up getting, thinking about asking them to take it to the dealer to service before we make a deal. |

DT malfunction like clockwork under WOT
Bought my first M5 two weeks ago -- 2013, stock. 70k miles. After a few miles of easy driving to familiarize myself with newfound power (coming from E92 M3), I hit M1 and floored it. Pulling hard in 3rd, I get the DT Mal and the car goes into limp mode. Something my M3 never did. I was very concerned that I had bought somebody else's problem, then I found this thread.
After a rest to compose herself, the car was running beautifully again. Put a new battery in as the original was still there and my dealer advised it was close to death. Tried the same hard acceleration in sequential mode yesterday with the same DT Mal result. Waiting until my extended warranty kicks in before making an issue at the dealership. But I have the sense that 10 out of 10 times I push the car the same, I'll get the DT Mal with limited power and limp mode.

Drivetrain Malfunction
I had the drive train malfunction once on September 28, 2018. I drove in Sport Plus mode for about 15 minutes and parked at the hotel to unload luggage. I went to park the car 10 minutes later. When I put the car in reverse to back into a spot, everything shut down. The car would not start after about 5 tries. After letting the car sit for about 20 minutes, the car started up and has ran fine ever since. However I still have not put the car into M (Sport Plus) since then.
