Left steering gear after collision.

So I was told by a technician that I need a front left lower control arm, front left knuckle, and front left steering gear.

They said anytime there is a hard impact to the suspension that the steering gear (rack and pinion) must be replaced, because of the electronics involved. Is this true?

Thanks for the help

He said that the part is 3,500, but I found one new online for 1,800. I wonder where he got the 3,500 from. Am I right in saying that the rack and pinion extend to both wheels ie (they are not separate pieces left and right.)

That's his profit I gather and just one rack, variable ratio, the middle teeth are spaced in more and the outer are more widely spaced being computer controlled.
I gather if it's one side its just the tie rod and tie rod joints being replaced otherwise the whole rack would have to be done. The rack casing itself does not split from the left to right.

I have the competition model. I have found two part numbers for it. One is 32102284867 and the other is 32102284987.

Both are listed for the competition package but look somewhat different.

Isn't this impact covered by auto insurance?

Yes, but I don't want my rates to shoot up. I already have two tickets on my insurance. I pay about 380 per month.

Yes that's a new complete rack, not just the left side pieces. With that impact the rack mounting lugs have probably broken off.

nothing is broken on the steering gear assembly. They just told me that with a hard impact bmw to the suspension/knuckle connected to the steering assembly that you must change it. They gave me a letter describing BMW's policy. My question is...if nothing is broken on the steering assembly can't they just replace control arm and knuckle and then clear the codes.

I suppose the steering assembly has some electronic function that creates codes when there is something wrong with the suspension.

BMW policy is strange though, they're covering themselves. If I were you I would replace only the parts that are damaged, maybe one of the steering rods is bent, in which case these can be replaced separately for not a lot of money.

I doubt the steering ECU is able to detect an impact unless its fitted with impact sensors. To be sure and save yourself a large sum of money, I would have them carry out a diagnostic on the steering module and airbag module. If no faults are stored then have them change the damaged parts only. I run a garage and fully understand the concept, if this happened to me I would check everything over then replace the necessary parts only.

Yes, I just got off the phone with a shop that does repairs on a lot of M5s . They said the same exact thing. He said he used to work for BMW and if the wheel was tapped they would replace the steering assembly.

Confused now, did he say to replace the assembly or necessary parts only?

Sorry, it cut half of my message off. I called another shop in Milwaukee that only works on BMWs and Porsche. My car right now is at a shop in Green Bay on the lift.

The guy in Milwaukee used to work for BMW and said 90% of the time they replaced the steering gear when they didn't have to. He said to replace only the damaged parts. He said that the dealership has been replacing the steering rack if a tire "was tapped".

The place where my car is now quoted me 6.5k. The guy in Milwaukee told me 2.5k for everything but the steering rack.

I am going to have it hauled to Milwaukee instead.

Good choice. Keep us informed. If possible attach images of before and after.

Some of the codes would already have been there more than likely and do not always indicate a fault. The steering angle codes however will clear and once a steering angle reset is carried out the car should he fine.

Once the battery starts getting low or has gone flat and then charged, you'll get codes from all kinds of modules. The shop will clear all those once they get to the point of the steering calibration reset.
