BMW wheel locks

I have to say these are the worst locks ever I recommend taking them off before your key gets stripped. I took my winter setup off and I was up to my last wheel and the key ended up stripping I had to bring it to a mechanic and they had to break the lock which damaged my wheel a little bit. Is there a way for BMW to get the same key? I have the serial number that the wheel locks came with

Yep the dealer can order a new one. Looks like the over torqued the lug.

There should be a digit or a few digits inside the locks or key. If I remember correctly.

I had the same problem with my X3. Changing to winter set up, for the first time, it took 3 guys to remove the wheel. Bought there and then a new set of locks. Bmws cost cutting 4 you there.

If one of the locks broke won't you have to order another complete set anyway? Or do they come with 5 locks? I can't remember

Is there a company that sells a titanium lock set? I was thinking of buying titanium bolts for my car when I fit up a set of HRE's to it.

Tikore makes titanium, pricey, I think mine were like $200.

+1, I had a nightmare with my OEM BMW Wheel locks on my HRE P101. Key stripped when Discount Tire tried to remove (EVEN THOUGH BOLTS TORQUED TO SPEC PREVIOUSLY!!!), Brought to BMW, they spent days on it (Trying another key, using specialty tool, etc), ended up damaging my wheel, and never got them off. Brought to another shop to get off. Huge fiasco with these. Also heard many complaints about these specific locks.

These are the one's listed for F10 M5 Part# 36136792851
They are considered the "advanced" set, come with one key, and look like this:
Also, they are supposed to have better security, the surround spins, etc.

Another OEM option I was thinking of trying for our cars from BMW is the "basic" set Part#36136776076 and come with 2 keys, and look like this:

Not sure if anyone has had experience with this other set?

Figured I'd chime in since we're talking titanium lugs and locks! I picked these up from BurgerTuning to go with my new wheels!

Wow! I really like those and seems like a great price compared to tikori. Anyway a you can get them without the logo? Does the logo rub off or laser etched? Thanks.

It comes with the logo. They look like they're etch in.

I'm not really a fan of the logo, but I'm more so not a fan of paying triple the price elsewhere for titanium lug bolts without the logos.

So, I ordered a set from BMS today. Looks like their lock design is more secure too. Thanks for the post!

That finish on the studs looks great with those wheels!

Which wheel locks did you have originally that had problems? I'm only aware of these two being offered by BMW. The first photo you posted is the only ones I see come on new models now (made by McGard).

The second photo you posted in the spline setup. These are the older models and can be stripped more easily.

The newer McGard set are the ones I had issues with. The key has that weird shape on the inside of the key. It basically cracked and then disintegrated trying to loosen a bolt that was torqued to spec.

Good old McGard now only gives you one key instead of 2, and if you break the key, most dealers don't stock them, so you get to wait 2 weeks for them to special order a replacement key in. That key will break just the same all over again.

Standard methods to try and get the lug off will fail because this bolt has additional security measures built in such as the spinning surround. If your lug well is tight, then clearance to slide something over is very limited.

I feel there are two problems.. One, the male part of the key simply doesn't go deep enough. Second, the material and construction of the key needs to be more solid. I refuse to ever use those wheel locks again after the fiasco it has caused me.

The BMS appear to have the older design. I imagine with the stronger titanium, and key being made of titanium (I hope), that stripping will be less prevalent than it's steel counterpart.

Also purchased MRP titanium stud & titanium lug conversion....

They are 14mm x 1.25 x 82mm. The 14 x 1.25 stud conversion kits have an outer thread pitch of 14 x 1.5 for compatibility and conversion for use with wheel locks and nuts.

I am going to use these instead. Having studs should make things much easier!

Those sure look good! Post some pics after install with your wheels.

I didn't think they were still making them since I saw a post they were only doing a limited run a couple years ago. I guess they decided to keep it around.

I would prefer these over regular steel studs that rust.

I'll have a set of the Tikore titanium locks with key for sale after this weekend if anyone cares, PM me, but it will be in the classifieds soon. Going back to stock since the M5 is being traded in. Locks only.
