Best advice of them all. Follow the manual. Everone will give their opinion and that's what it is. Btw, congrats and safe driving.

Indeed - follow the manual. It turns out that engineers who design stuff and have a lot of experience with that, and the documentation and wisdom of previous generations of engineers to refer to actually have a clue about that sort of thing.
On top of that, it has also been recommended to me to make sure the diff is worked, too - if you only do big turns you don't exercise the diff before its oil gets changed at break-in. I was told to go basically as fast as you feel comfortable with, and do 20 turns full-lock left, 20 turns full-lock right, then 20 figure-8s. I did it, and I felt a small improvement afterwards on cornering - marginally more smooth. I did this in the day or two before the break-in service, so that the oil change in the break-in service took all the little metal slivers out. |

I broke my 550i in by the book. 1qt oil every 4-6 months or so. I've taken everything in and decided spirited driving within reason is ok and only after the engine is warmed up. I agree, don't baby it. For the record, I don't know anything about anything but simply couldn't wait to enjoy this beautiful machine as I waited long enough before she arrived.

I did exactly this as well... within the BMW specs but still up and down the RPM range with engine braking. Mine used no oil in its first 1800 miles as well.

Quick Update
Took her out today for a quick drive (now has 40 miles on the clock) She's Bloody amazing...i feel like a king. Forgive the obvious statement "completely different kind of engine delivery with the Turbo's". Between 3 - 5k rpm it feels real quick. I remember thinking how slow my M3 was within this range (M4 should be mental i guess). When i start the car the noise is sweet - not loud or throaty, just full and powerful. Cannot wait to hear her on full chat. The Interior is like walking upstairs on BA flight and turning left...simply gorgeous. Any initial regrets - Yes, should have paid the 3K for the B&O system, as the H&K might be lost in the M5's additional space. I will task myself to do a proper comparison in the near future - who knows it may help somebody. I drove past the stealers today and saw the arse of my ex SB M3 sticking out of the valeting bay...a weird feeling for sure, both sad and happy. Whoever gets Helga will be proper chuffed i thought to myself as i pulled away from the lights...proper chuffed as i am now in my M5. |

After that just drive normal with blasting (were you can) but not exceeding 5.5K, should be good. My LCI drives really well and picks up in any gear hard.

What mode did you drive in? Were you still in auto the whole time, letting the dct change up and down gears for you? Or did you use the paddles in the first 50 miles?
