How rare are Carbon Ceramic Brakes?
Hey guys, I've been looking for an F10 M5 for about a month now and have seen a ton of cars for sale at both dealers and by private owners. So far, for cars in my search criteria (13/14 under $40k) I don't think I've seen a single one w/ CCBs! Were CCBs offered as an option on 13's? I know they were for 2014. Heck even in up to $45k, I don't think I've seen any with CCBs. Does anyone here have CCBs? Can anyone point me to breakdown of build numbers/stats?
Thanks!

Ceramic Brakes
G’day
Ceramic Brakes were only available for the M5 LCI update : ie MY 2014 model. There is a Bmw Carbon Ceramic Brake Technical Bulletin available on the internet (if you google this option it will explain this option and all of the Technical details and Maintenance/Care). I’ve been looking to upgrade my LCI M5 to better and bigger front brakes ; and their are cheaper options (410 mm disc’s plus calipers which require 20” wheels). By the way be very careful of anyone offering second-hand Ceramic Brakes here or elsewhere : To operate Ceramic Brakes properly Bmw states that a complete Brake Kit is required not just the disc’s and calipers (you must install the specific Bmw Brake Booster as well). Also Ceramic Brake disc’s if not handled properly and/or are subject to stone/physical damage can render them structurally unsound and subject to catastrophic failure. Cheers Bruce |

I have CCBs on my Beast. It may be overkill but the brakes are very grippy.

You must remember that CCB's are effective only when fully heated up with performance driving. If you use the car in city/traffic and suburban areas mostly then they may not be for you and be prepared for reduced performance with brake squeal.Of what I can see on my island is that they are almost non existent.

I literally searched for my 2014 M5 for a couple of years. I was looking for a specific exterior / interior color combination without specifics to the brakes. I found the perfect car a couple of months ago and it just happened to have CCB's. It was the only car in the price range I was looking in ... $45K to $50K ... that I ever saw that had CCB's. My guess is that you don't see many of them in any price range because they are such an expensive option. They were a $9,200 option on my '14.
I have seen multiple different posts and comments about the CCB's being noisy and squealing in around town driving. I have not experienced that. They are as quiet as any brake system I have seen. Also, many comments about how they do not perform unless they are heated under track driving conditions. My experience with them disagrees with that as well. They are designed to be used hard without heating and fading but they still have a serious OMG factor in normal driving conditions. Also lot's of comments about how expensive CCB's are to maintain. I won't argue that they are expensive but I would observe that the vast majority of people who drive an M5 will never touch the CCB's from a maintenance standpoint. They simply are not driven hard enough to ever wear them out. Besides, if maintenance cost is a concern then why in the world would anyone ever choose to drive a high performance luxury automobile?!? Maintenance expense is just a part of the game. If you ever get a chance to drive an M5 with CCB's you will see what I mean. There simply isn't any comparison. Good luck on your search .... such a cool feeling when you finally find the one for sale that makes your eyes light up and that little voice inside say "That's The One"!!!!!!

I have CCBs and I love them and the look. However, while they feel more grippy, it doesn't mean the actual performance is better. Feel and actual performance are two different things. I have been to multiple BMW driving school and instructors told me the brake marker for them on track are the same for both steel and CCB. Meaning while they maybe be more resistant to fade, it maybe not stop any better than the steel counter part. Plus they are way expensive to replace so not recommended for track use.

In the BMW bulletin they acknowledge that the actual braking performance is only slightly better than standard M brakes. The advantage is in the absence of fade in frequent hard high temp generating braking activities. I.E. track and road course driving. Also keep in mind that the ability of the brakes to stop the car are in direct correlation to the ability of the tires to grip against the deceleration forces.
That said I agree with PhatCat. I do love the feel and the look.

I had Ceramic's on my 15 M4 and 16 M4 GTS and on both my GT3's and love/d them. Both my M4 and my GT3's got track duty which is where you will notice the difference.
What's interesting is you get $0 on trade on the BMW's which is not the case with the Porsche's! Best thing about CCB's is NO brake dust, worst is they can tend to squeak!! FWIW, I wish I had them on my M5!! Cheers,

Having had an M5 with both steel and ceramic, I can say that I simply love not dealing with the brake dust, the squeel is horrible, and if they're cold you don't get the full bite...all that being said I love them and I'll make every effort to continue to buy cars with the package, but I would never pay for the set new. $9,000 option that adds almost no pre-owned value.

Oki doki what we have learnt is that CC brakes cancel out brake dust to an extent and perform from cold marginally better with limited fade with heavy use though the freight train squeal is still prominent.
We've got to ask is it worth the kings ransom for the addition keeping in mind the high pad cost at replacement time. |

*From what I've heard* people tend to prefer steel brakes for the track if they track often, because whether you use steel or ceramic, if you're using it agressively on the track either one of them will have to be replaced and CCB's + Rotors are more than 10x more expensive to replace. So if you track the car more than a few times a year - steel may be a better option as you can get nearly 10 sets of rotors and pads for the price of 1 CCB change.
Someone said "Maintenance shouldn't be a concern because its a performance luxury vehicle" - we're not talking about a $500 oil change here... Full rotors and Pads will cost more than $18,000 at the dealer to replace. Its an M5, not a 458 Speciale. 25% of vehicle cost to replace a wear and tear item is absurd. If you really value the grippyness of the CCB and can handle a $20k bill once or twice a year (if you're tracking) then 100% get the CCB. |

My CCB's have done 90.000km and show very little wear, if any.
I expect them to last the life of the car. I have heard that Porsche owners who has CCB's on their Nurburgring track cars typically last 60-90.000km on track use only. You can easily ruin them by using wheel degreasers/chemicals or during a wheel change by knocking the wheel against the rotor. I find the very grippy, unless when wet, then they need a few seconds to dry before they grip properly.

My ceramics have roughly 37k miles on them and they've done some HEAVY braking. They still look brand new and shine like a mirror.
