Oil Type and weight

Hey guys!

Wondering what everyone runs/recommends for oil during winter and then spring/summer, I have an M5 Competition that I bought in October that will be needing an oil change soon, I have been driving it during the winter on nice days with winter wheels/tires. I also own an M6 v10 convertible alpine white and put Castrol 10w-60, that car is a spring summer car only (I alwaysI let the car idle for a good bit to get the temp up before driving which was a common mistake by many). I am comfortable with heavier weight oils as I have had no issues with the M6 having it for 3.5 years, I am thinking 5w-40 for the M5 for spring summer then next winter either Ow-40 or 0w-30. I have noticed the hot V does run hotter than the m6.

Any suggestions / experience? Always appreciate everyone's input!

Do you run that year round? I live in the northeast where winters can get cold this year so far has been great.

BMW recommends 0-30 over here,I use Edge (could be a winter oil where you are) and you are right about letting the V10 engine warm up without load up to five minutes or longer while the oil circulates. Of course some people know better and drive of immediately then wonder why they have problems later.

I run Mobil 1 0w-40 year round in Buffalo. No issues. FYI - the first number in the oil weight designation is for cold start. The smaller the number, the better it is for cold start. If you wanted to run 2 different oils in the S63, I would recommend 5w-40 in summer and 0w-30 or 0w-40 in winter.

thanks guys did a good bit[IMG]undefined[/IMG] of research and Liqui Molly is killer oil with rave reviews gonna go with either 0w-40 or 5w-40 I really think the engine will be better protected with the 40 especially as hot as it gets ...there is an interesting new oil from them Liqui Molly Molygen it has some interesting additives that have superior protection and its green anyone use that one? Or is it best to stick to "Leichtlauf high tech" which is on the m5 recommended list however Molygen didnt exist when it was released

I saw that they released the new "green" one but I havn't made the jump to it yet. Been happy with the one I have right now:

I run Castrol Edge 0w40. Also in the north east, but my car is in storage from Dec-April.

You'll be fine whatever you choose as long as your within BMW specs.

Same oil for me. My memory on researching it was the Edge 0w40 was actually a better base stock than what they use in the 5w40. 0w40 apparently got some level of reformulation recently, though. Not sure how much it's changed.

Very well could be, when I first bought my M5 I did a lot of research and even went on bobsoilguy.com etc seeing what was best/recommended. I'm not a scientist so I don't understand all the additives etc and what they do and don't do. The general consensus was that Castrol Edge 0W40 was a very good oil, inexpensive, easily obtained and also since the turbos generate so much heat I opted for the 40 weight. Our V engines create and hold so much heat, that is why I went with the 0W40. I also change my oil once a year right before it goes into winter storage so it sits with fresh new oil. I also only average 1500-3000 miles a year lol.
